    Back to more balanced discussion

I see there is a move from all main parties to distance themselves from the SNP... who of course would only work with a labour minority govt. Difficult for Labour who clearly would not want to form a govt with a party which ultimately seeks separation from UK... and the LibDems saying they would not be a third party in such a govt....

OMG.... the worse solution would be a result with no workable option..... not good for our economy.. buy your foreign currency now!

I hesitate to enter this discussion as it has been taken to such dizzying debating heights. But.....the other night a senior SNP member was asked if he was advocating voters in England to vote Labour and he just would not answer. At first I could not understand it as the SNP have made clear that their ideal scenario post election is a Labour/SNP coalition -so why not recommend people in England to vote Labour. Then I realised it would probably backfire and be turned against them as the follow up question would be if they support Labour in one part of the UK then they cannot be too opposed to them in Scotland. Difficult position for them really.

Therein lies the problem, yorkie - a lack of understanding of the SNP aspirations. Under Alex Salmond, yes home rule definitely meant full independence - under Nicola Sturgeon it means something else. She does not want the collapse of the Union and she has stated that publicly many times - perhaps the English media choose not to report that (more likely are told not to, but that's another story). Her vision, and it's the vision of an ever-growing majority of the population, is one of a partnership - a partnership where each member takes full responsibility for their own governance, with shared responsibility for defence and foreign affairs, and with continued trade relations. I have to admit that this was actually mooted when the referendum was first agreed to - Cameron rejected it, for reasons perfectly clear to those north of the border but apparently not to those south of it.

I think last year's referendum changed the nature of the UK. It would be best to recognise that and to have at least one party support a full Federal solution. Four states with their own parliaments governing "national" or "State" matters and then a Federal government for defence etc and whose responsibility it was to even up growth etc across the UK as a whole

Hopefully the Uk will reject Sturgeon's views on Trident, increased public spending, NHS and most other things she stands for. I'm now quite resigned to Scottish independence, give them a chance to carry out their theories on themselves, as long we are not asked to pick up the financial pieces.

Well for sheer condescending arrogance that takes the cake. Your contributions to this thread have done little else but reveal your total ignorance about Scotland, its people, its political parties and its leaders - and have shown that what you think you know has been gleaned by reading the nonsensical propaganda regularly spouted by Establishment controlled 'newspapers'. Then you have the gall to state "I'm now quite resigned..." as though it is some sort of personal, unavoidable disaster for you. One that is an affront to your sensibilities or to your warped belief that you are somehow superior to the entire population of a country, a population who you consider have no right to either access their democratic right to participate in government, who have no right to self-determination, and no right to even attempt to address the wrongs that your favoured political party have heaped on them over the last three decades in particular. Pick up the financial pieces? A spiteful remark, made knowing deep down inside two things - first, that even in the unlikely event of failure, the Scots would never demean themselves again by asking for Westminster's assistance - they know all too well the price of that - and second, if their are any pieces to be picked up, they won't be Scotland's. The very fact that every coalition MP regularly promotes the claim that Scotland is subsidised should tell that the opposite is true.

Not sure how Labour can put a cap on private rents (much as it would benefit me as a renter) as has been reported. I don't like some of the fleecing going on but equally I am not sure a Government should be able to stop you charging what you want for someone to use your possessions.

That said, I also think the Tories are talking complete balderdash when saying this would damage house building.
