The crowd applauds Richie Benaud on his way back to the pavilion after a long and distinguished innings.

RIP Richie. Thanks for the memories.

One of the true cricket legends, and a sublime commentator too...

"And Glenn McGrath dismissed for two, just ninety-eight runs short of his century"

    RIP Richie.

Ouch!! - one of the greatest and most knowledgeable voices in cricket. Along with Brian Johnston and John Arlott, the three I never tired of listening to.

    RIP

Oh no I just saw this. One of the giants of the game, probably the best commentator of any sport let alone cricket.

    A sad day indeed.

I'm not a cricket fan, but his was a voice I couldn't miss growing up, and I know how much he was admired.

I see one of the quotes attributed to him (regarding commentary) was “The key thing was to learn the value of economy with words and to never insult the viewer by telling them what they can already see”

A good few of the current crop could do well heeding that!

    RIP <peacedove>

Ashes, 2005. His last day as a commentator in England.
And the two most bitter rivals in cricket (Apologies India and Pakistan) deeply embroiled in an Ashes contest both form a guard of honour as he steps up to the microphone. Legend <ok> <rose>

As one who was educated in cricket by John Arlott, who made radio commentary alive (I cheated and had the TV with the sound turned off as I listened to the radio commentary). It was an education, and a very enjoyable one at that. Richie Benaud put TV commentary into a different class with the economy that has been mentioned. He added to what you saw without interfering with it. A great innings all around, Richie, and thank you for that! :emoticon-0148-yes:

I once had the privilege to meet the great man once at the SCG during a 2nd team game and he took about 45 mins to chat purely as I liked cricket and rather than me listen to Richie talk he wanted to listen to me.

A great man he will be missed

A real gentlman who was totally sublime in his commentary. He never criticised people he was just a wonderful background to the game itself and as RBF said with messers Johnston and Arlott were a wonderful set. Now we are without any of them and the World is a sadder pace for it. RIP and thank you.
