I used to go the Gardeners a lot too when I lived in that area. Suppose it depends what you want from a night, but one of my faves which is reasonably local to me is the Ye Olde Black Boy. It's just fantastic, have Hobgoblin on tap too which is nice stuff. And I agree with whoever said, Ye Olde White Hart too, another good one.

I assumed that you would all choose The Weir in Hessle to treat your "friend" to a few beers!!!

Also used to go to the Three Tuns on Wednesday(?) quiz night. We used to cheat on the pop round by using the Guiness Book of Hit Records!(in the days before the internet)

Unfortunately my local is Queens in Hedon, ****e but best of a bad bunch.

Much prefer a jaunt down Prinny Ave even if it does mean a costly cab there and back.

We also used to use the Duke of Wellington (Tetleys) on Peel St./Welly Lane corner, when I lived in Albany Street. Sitting in 'the lounge' one day and a guy ran in and popped a baby on to my lap, then disappeared behind the bar (into the Public Bar). Just as he disappeared, a bunch of plods ran in, behind him. He'd nicked the bairn from 'their lass'..

A guy used to come around selling cockles ('Death Cockles') and anyone who bought and ate 'em got laid up with the squits and bokes for days...

Aaaahhhh - the good old days......

The Star in Willerby and the Cheese House ( I think thats it's name in town ). Being a long time since I was home.
Now it's Froggers Bar & Grill, Apopka, Florida ( full of rednecks with no teeth and dodgy eyes ). Pubs aren't the same in the states.

I was in one in 'Frisco, in 1991. There was an old guy along the bar and I got talking to him. he asked me where I was from and when I said Hull, he said "Earl de Grey". He'd been a seaman and he remembered the killer grey parrot on the end of the bar.

And I learned that you leave your change on the bar..when you get another beer, the barman/maid takes the necessary and then when you leave, you leave some of your change (10%?) as a tip.

I noticed the difference when I was home in the uk last year, I left a 2 pound coin on the bar after I bought a pint and the little barmaid shouted after me "hey you left some money on the bar"
I also found out if you want a beer you have to go to the bar and get the bugger yourself nobody is bringing it to you ha ha ha.
Funny the things you forget when you been gone for a while

Bass House in town. Loved it in there. You used to get all the girls from Humber Pickle in on a Friday afternoon. The place was full of characters. I always remember being in there at Christmas in the 80's when the DJ said over the mic- this bloke has just come up and requested Last Christmas by George Michael, are you a fukin tart im playing LA Woman next.
It was always said about Cheese in the 80's that it sold the most pints of Stella anywhere in the country.

Ye John think it was cos that Mansfield stuff was god awful! Its making me very nostalgic this thread.Any girl you met on the Saturday night you would arrange to meet on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. Back then you used to get a bus into town and if you were meeting a girl she would be stood outside ABC pictures waiting for you. If she wasnt as good looking as you remember, I'd get off in station and go straight to Gingerman for a few quick pints to improve her!! Then it was Shire Horse, Star of The West, Masters Bar, Bass, Cheese, White Horse.

Nowhere near where I lived (Kirk Ella) but the Whalebone on Wincolmlee used to be the best beer in Hull 30 years ago!

East Riding was good Tetley too. Also New Inn on Hedon Rd. Gardeners as well, that was also full of women as an added bonus.
