QPR's Les Ferdinand wants Rooney Rule to combat 'lack of diversity'

QPR director Les Ferdinand says a Rooney Rule would provide more opportunities for minority coaches.
QPR director of football Les Ferdinand has called for a Rooney Rule-style law to be introduced in English football to challenge what he believes is a "lack of diversity" in the game.
Football Association chairman Greg Dyke was first to suggest the adoption of the American system -- which requires NFL teams to interview at least one minority candidate for each head coaching role -- in 2014.
And now Ferdinand has reopened the debate by insisting it could be the best way to give prospective black managers the confidence to aspire to positions they currently feel are beyond them.
Ferdinand told Sky Sports: "We're not saying you have to give anybody the job -- we're just saying 'give us an interview' -- that's all.
"It's just a case of being able to sit down and put your credentials on the table. At the moment we're not even getting that chance.
"People often talk and say 'I'm not racist' and don't even realise that they are being racist because they won't give you that opportunity.
"You may have already decided who your next manager is going to be but if I sit down in front of you I might impress you so much that you might recommend me to someone else."
Dyke's support for the Rooney Rule was not shared by others in the game with both Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore and the League Managers' Association rejecting the idea.
But Ferdinand's views are shared by anti-racist campaigners Kick It Out, which told Sky Sports News: "The access to opportunities for employment in football continue to be out of reach for many. The recruitment procedures are flawed, and there is a lack of accountability and transparency in the processes.
"We need to see a level playing field established where individuals possessing the necessary qualifications and experience are able to apply and be taken into proper consideration for positions.
"As it stands, many credible candidates who are suitable for jobs do not feel it is worthwhile applying as they see a closed culture which exists preventing them from having a fair chance."

He needs to concentrate on what he's being paid for, he's not made a very impressive start judging by comments coming out of the club...

I may be wrong but I see him as the supposed link between the board and management. A traditional DoF helps the chairman choose a manager and then has a big say on transfers leaving the coaches to simply coach. It's early days but I can't see what he's done if anything. I like Ramsey but it was hardly an inspired decision.

Les would be well advised to shut his mouth and concentrate on the job he's paid to do.

If he wants an example of how to excel in the DOF role, look at Les Reed's work at Southampton.

They consistently have a shortlist of Managers, the actually scout them and know which ones fit their profile for style of play etc. Maybe start there Sir Les?

Outline and drive the importance of our academy, introduce contractual demands on the Head of the Academy that he must produce a certain amount of players for the 1st team within the duration of his contract.

Ramsey's skill set is on the training ground, not the dugout. Karl Robinson's work at MK Dons goes under the radar consistently, he could well be the man to rebuild and adhere to a culture where we're phasing in youngsters, improving them, and selling them for a considerable profit. He's already done that this season with 18 year old Dele Ali, now signed by Everton.

In short Les, hire a new Manager at the end of the season, sort the academy out, and start producing some results on the pitch.

    Exactly this
He says that English football racist as well.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-says-English-football-inherently-racist.html
I would like to see him charged by the FA and kicked out of our club.
We lost a former England manager in Hoddle for this idiot who has poisoned our club and with Ramsey, guaranteed relegation.

You want Ferdinand kicked out for saying that there is racism in English football? Who would you like to take over, John Terry?

The sort of stupid reply I would expect from you stroller.
Every post you make is stupid.
We were improving and out of the relegation positions when clueless TF signed Ferdinand and never even knew what role to give him.
If you cannot see that Ferdinand has a chip on his shoulder and thinks all white people are racist, that is because you walk round all day with your head up your arse.

This could be quite an interesting debate, only before the Spurs game two friends and I were discussing QPR´s management change recently, in that we now had a black chairman, a black DOF and a black manager and if we (QPR) were trying to make a statement regarding ´minorities´ in non-playing football positions. It´s bold move and of course if you can do the job then colour, etc... shouldn´t come in to it. As for Les Ferdinand, loved him as a player for us, hope he can do a job upstairs but you should never rely on previous popularity if your not up to the task and try not to distract yourself with external issues that are too far from the job in hand, a boyhood Spurs fan as well if I remember.

When interviewing a prospective employee, only one thing should matter. Not colour, not creed, not religion, not sexual orientation, nothing other than whether that person is the best person for that job.
Positive discrimination in this regard is plain wrong!
