What a season this man is having, the 1.2M we paid is fast becoming a better deal than Lambo's Mill, and that is saying something. Now to the point of the thread, on Sunday, Mr Angry Costa got a bit shirty with him, & gave him a big shove in the 2nd half, he looked ready to start all sorts of crap. Jose, after shrugging off the push goes over & says something that calms the beast down to the extent I've not yet witnessed before in this season - or in Spain come to think of it. I think he even got an apology from him!!!! Jose Fonte, what a guy!
Yes, I'd love to know what he said to Costa! I absolutely agree with you, he has been an absolute rock this season. And of course, in previous seasons, notably last year, when he made Lovren look good.
I mentioned before that Fonte deals calmly with the ref and, after giving his point of view, accepts the ref's decision... this prevents anyone else getting drawn into a row. Fonte is a true leader of the pack. Although not the main reason, this could also be in our favour if the ref is wondering if Jose fouled someone.
It's between him and Morgan for Saints player of the season IMO, but Captain Fantastic edges it because he has been almost ever present.. Amazing to think that these two bedrocks were in our League One team. He is a natural born leader and probably should've been captain long before this season, he is going to make a great manager in the future (a long time away I hope!)
I'm Morgan's biggest fan but I don't think he's really in the conversation for player of the season. He's without doubt our best player but other players have played better than him this year. Namely all of our defence and Wanyama (although if Morgan keeps his Chelsea form for the rest of the season he'll be in the conversation).
Nothing will beat the £1mill we paid for Lambert. His goals in the Championship got us to the PL. Rickie was the bargain of the century. Jose has also proven to be a bargain but he took a while to adapt to the PL and we could have gone up without him. We would never have gone up without Rickie's goals. Having said all that, Jose has turned out to be a super captain and even better CB.
Yes, I agree, you shouldn't really compare Jose to Rickie. Rickie was our leading striker for 4 seasons in a row and took us from the bottom of League One to the Prem, but Jose played a hugely important role in holding a leaky defence together. This season, he has stepped up to an even higher level and is a key figure in the best defence in English football, as well as being a great leader and captain.
Jose played the full 90 mins in a friendly against Italy on Tuesday. Portugal won 1-0. I'm really pleased for him, not only achieving his targets, but getting the recognition he deserves. With the way he reads the game so well, hopefully he stays with us in some capacity (I reckon he'll go into coaching) after he finishes playing. C. L. L. Saint Fonte
