Everton's Romelu Lukaku scores their second goal from the penalty spot
John Carver cut a frustrated figure after the fall-out from Newcastle United’s latest defeat left them minus their captain and with only one fit centre-back for the Wear-Tyne derby.

Fabricio Coloccini’s red card for a second-half lunge at Aaron Lennon will see him suspended against Arsenal (home), Sunderland (away) and Liverpool (away).

Carver will study the video of the 3-0 defeat at Everton again after saying the clips he saw on his laptop were “inconclusive” but it seems unlikely the Magpies will be able to successfully appeal the decision. No wonder a coach who already has seven players injured and Papiss Cisse suspended for the next six matches was left to say: “I’m not Harry Houdini!”

“I cannot magic something up, but I will give the situation everything and work with what I have.

“I think the majority of fans understand that.

“It’s just one of those things when you think you’re getting somewhere on the squad size front – getting Jack Colback back from suspension, Remy Cabella coming back into the group again and Rob Elliot coming back – you think you’re getting somewhere then all of a sudden you could lose your captain for three games – and a defender which we’re not blessed with many of.

“I’m working with the group of players I have. I can’t wave a magic wand and bring anybody in from the outside.

“I’m not losing people through silly training-ground injuries, I’m losing them through silly red and yellow cards. I have a huge, huge injury list at St James’ Park and I’m working with what I havet.

“Losing Coloccini will take the numbers down even more.

“I know the situation I’m in and I can’t do anything about it, I just get on with it and continue to work with it until I’m told otherwise.

“That’s important because if I start throwing the towel in, I’m the leader of that group in that dressing room.

“They haven’t thrown the towel in, that’s for sure.

“Sometimes your best is not good enough but at least they’re having a go. I’ll make sure by my not being negative I rub off on them and hopefully we’ll pick up some results.”

Given he is still hoping to win a contract as next season’s head coach, Carver could hardly say so, but the situation has been compounded by Newcastle’s attitude to the January transfer window.

They went into it light on defenders – especially centre-backs – yet finished it with three less. Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s loan to Roma was made permanent, and Davide Santon and Remi Streete were loaned out.

With injuries to Steven Taylor, Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara – though the latter should be fit soon – it leaves Mike Williamson as the only fit central defender.

Rolando Aarons, Siem De Jong, Cheik Tiote Knee and Mehdi Abeid are also out.

Williamson was partnered by right-back Daryl Janmaat for the final 34 minutes. At that stage Jack Colback (left-back), Moussa Sissoko (right midfield), Yoan Gouffran and Jonas Gutierrez (both central midfield) were also playing in unfamiliar positions.

Carver, who revealed he had a frank two-way conversation with his players after the game, saw the performance as mixed, praising the start and the finish, but critical of the performance for much of the time when both sides had 11 men.

I agree with him in so much that he can't be blamed for the injuries and the silly cards - however he is seriously deluded if he thinks he is good enough to be manager of the greatest club in the world!

The fans would understand more if he were calling Ashley and Penfold out for not buying good enough, or enough, players. He should be giving to them with both barrels. I can't see how any man with even an ounce of self-respect would work under these conditions.

He obviously hopes he'll get the job full time, but, in his heart he knows it wont happen.
Anyone who thinks he was going to turn down the chance to be in charge for the rest of the season, are as deluded as him.
Its his dream job, so why would he knock it back.

Of course he's not the right man for the job, but, he didn't put himself in charge did he.
Ashley gets off scot free again, with the latest Coach the easy target.

Yes, we do understand Carver. We understand that you're a thick bar steward living your dream.
I'm very pleased for you. But now it's time to wake up and go do a proper job.

It's very simple. Either he (Ashley) goes or we go and unfortunately he is not going anywhere. I have never felt this way following Newcastle before but everyone I talk to is looking at this season ticket renewal as being their last if Carver is appointed, the investment remains the same, the entertainment remains the same and disdain for the fans remain the same. The last two home matches I as took my seat I thought what's the point.

    Welcome on board mate.
I know a canny few who will be chucking their ST's if Carver gets the job.
That will be the straw which breaks the camel's back.

Sad thing is it does not have to be this way. I am more than happy that it is run as a business to return a profit but this is taking the p*** - and unfortunately it's out of us.

I honestly think that part of his disdain for the fans goes back to when he used to drink with us. He got too close and then got his fingers burnt when the fans turned. From then on in he's had an axe to grind.
He is like this in real life as I know someone who works with him at SD.
    He's a ruthless bassad.
