Scotland football star Andy Robertson shuns presents at his 21st birthday and asks for donations to a food bank

Scotland football star Andy Robertson shunned presents at his 21st birthday – and asked for donations to a food bank.

Family and friends piled in with donations at the bash at Parklands Country Club, near Glasgow, raising £500 for hungry families.

Robertson – who made a big money move to Hull City last summer – said: “I’m doing OK for myself and I decided I didn’t really need any kind of presents.

“I was trying to think of something special to do and my parents came up with the idea of helping out East Renfrewshire Food Bank.

“It’s not far from where I grew up, they do amazing work and I know they help a lot of people out.

“I made sure my friends and family were all well aware of the plans before the night and they were more than happy to pitch in.”

Left-back Robertson made his international debut as a sub in a 1-0 win over Poland last March.

He left Dundee United last July for £2.85million and quickly established himself as a first-team regular.

He had to get back to training with Hull and so could not drop off the cash his 140 guests raised for the Thornliebank charity.

Andy added: “There are lots of different people who use food banks – from young parents to older people.

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to hand over the cheque myself.

“I wish I had been able to drop in but my mum and dad did it on my behalf.

“I really was glad to help and I hope more people will give their time and effort for others.”

The food bank – staffed by 40 volunteers with learning difficulties – have handed out 20 tons of food since last April.

Ewan Gurr, the manager for food bank charity the Trussell Trust in Scotland, said: “I am delighted Andy Robertson has identified one of the most practical ways of responding to need by an act that may be small to him but significant to the beneficiaries of East Renfrewshire Food Bank

“The worrying reality is that East Renfrewshire Food Bank – in one of the 10 least deprived local authorities in Scotland – has provided a three-day supply of nutritionally balanced emergency food to more than 2500 men, women and children in the last year.”
