But Di Canio came out in support of his successor, claiming that billionaire American Short is responsible for Sunderland’s current plight. ‘It’s not Poyet’s fault because chairman Ellis Short is the real origin of all these troubles,’ Di Canio told Fox Sports. ‘I saved Sunderland when the club was sinking, along with my staff. I completed a true miracle, on and off the pitch. ‘We tried to change the philosophy of the team. In the two previous years, no fines were given, despite players getting drunk and partying until late, even a few days before a match. ‘I was giving fines even for (players being) five minutes late. ‘It’s fundamental, to keep order in the dressing room. I took all the responsibilities, but my project was immediately cut off. ‘It was a choice which came from above. When I was the manager, two directors chose 16 players. ‘None of them are still at the club - neither the players, nor those directors.'
I won't say what I believe he should do, I'd get crucified. But, he keeps getting it wrong. His basic plan, if there is one, is flawed. There are models, wildly successful models, that he should follow. Band aids and random, uncoordinated signings not serving a long term plan (see DOF) are a recipe for relegation battles. One he will lose soon. You can only dodge so many bullets. Look what Southampton did, and who they brought in. Ellis needs help, someone to tell him what to do and how to do it. There are people out there, if he wants to find them. I'm not speaking about a manager, but someone with vision who runs the entire football operation.
Nowt worse than an "I told you so" smart ass sticking his head out of the toilet pan and spouting out to the press at a time like this. Typically lacking in class.
Think my lad hoyed this up earlier Roger.. How I see it, we keep talking about 5 year plans, 10 year plans etc so lets take a look at Southampton 5/6 years ago, league 2, on the brink of bankruptcy and with the appointment of one or two stormed the leagues. They look how we should have been from 06/07 onwards, a team and club well run by people who care. The owner btw is a fruit job heiress who doesn't give a **** on the surface but who I believe has a hell of an input. They look like a team like we should look now and even when they sold half of their best, they recruited better by simply employing a man that knows football, with no axe to grind and no ego to prove..
There are new models, using new metrics (ie Sabermetrics) that have changed the way sports clubs/franchises are run. It's about philosophy from top to bottom. It's about a very exact, well thought out plan that requires the buy-in of everyone that works for the club. It's about sustainability. It's about working within your budget. It's about being smarter than everyone else with whom you compete. It's about exploiting market inefficiencies (more on that later). Southampton is the best Prem example. Their new Chairman is a Canadian with a hockey background. No matter. He knows what he is doing. Billy Beane, a name which may be familiar, had a book written about him called Moneyball. They made a movie about it starring Brad Pitt. He is the Guru, the Man. He has built the model on how to successfully run a club/franchise. He is as geeky as I am about English football, and has publicly stated he wants to run a club. I'd have him on a plane tonight. SAFC would be the new Southampton, only more successful. Let the bashing begin.
there's got to be something in what "the outlaw" is suggesting, we do seem to be stuck in this cycle of failure with a series of new managers but the overall pattern never really changes. There's a swift upturn when the new guy comes in, a levelling off and then a slow but sure decline until Ellis pulls the trigger.............then it all starts again. Our best hope now is that we can somehow stay up, then it's time for some really radical and innovative thinking over the summer.
I`ve said it before and I`ll say it again. Ellis needs to clear out the boardroom and bring people in who know and care about football. Byrne and Co. can pack their bags and **** off.
Don`t think so. I think he needs better football advice and he`s not going to get it with the board he`s got. Byrne & Co have to go imo.
If rumours are true, he might be listening to Cognerton more and more on the footballing side of things.
