As a fan, you'd be pissed off with that first half showing, but the way some of them carried on this afternoon was an embarrassing disgrace.
They're just a bunch of knobs, actively supporting a *****phile, he maybe innocent until proven guilty, but chanting "He shags who wants" was disgusting, I hope they go down, it'll be a reality check they deserve, a club is never too big to go down.
I know we’re talking about football supporters here, but they come across as hyper emotional and seem to lurch from the one embarrassment to the next. The next manager they get in will be the messiah (again): the bee’s knees/ can’t put a foot wrong/the bestest/greatest – ‘I’m in tears as I type these superlatives*’. Within 18 months, whoever he is, he’ll be the scum of the earth. Bluntly the cycle is: Appointment - messiah – beat Newcastle – drip drip realisation of actual mediocrity – sheer hatred – Sacking - Appointment - messiah – beat Newcastle – drip drip realisation of actual mediocrity – sheer hatred – Sacking - Appointment - messiah – beat Newcastle – drip drip realisation of actual mediocrity – sheer hatred – Sacking - Appointment - messiah – beat Newcastle – drip drip realisation of actual mediocrity – sheer hatred – Sacking - Appointment - messiah – beat Newcastle – drip drip realisation of actual mediocrity – sheer hatred – Sacking -… * I did actually read someone about a year ago on RTG claiming to be ‘in tears as he typed’ his love for Poyet
Excellent summary there LTT. I've gone from wanting them to stay up due to some mates supporting them, to really hoping they go down. Obviously they're still the type of fans we should be aspiring to emulate though. Proper fans up there. Oh yeah.
I’ve had a few Sunlan supporting mates over the years and in truth, they’ve all been a bit mental but great laughs with it and all in all, sound. With regard to the team: Sunlan should have been relegated last season. Naturally, I really don’t mind who goes down as long as it preserves us, but if I had to call it, I think they’ll scrape it and stay up and in reality, I see it as simply between us and Burnley for the third spot.
There's deluded ****ers with every club. We had a mass exodus against Newcastle. If Brucey hadnt turned it round it would have gotten like that here too. Fickle ****ers everywhere. I like Sunderland, great people on the whole, hope they stay up. But not at our expense.
A few seasons in the Championship would do Sunderland good. I wouldn't like to see them bounce back up after just one season. Let them see that they don't have a God given right to mix with the Uniteds, Arsenals, Chelseas and (dare I say it) Hulls of the football elite.
I worked in Sunlun in the mid-60's and remember my first visit to Roker Park. I couldn't believe the passion of the fans as compared to ours (and we had the 'Waggy Era' team at the time). I worked for a Gents Tailors (March the Tailor) as the Display Manager for the North East. Sunlun wasn't a successful branch taking a mere 3-400 quid a week and the Ladies Department was taking over a thousand every week. The bosses were concerned and sent me up there to see if I could do anything. It didn't take me long to realize that our Company designed window backing was in Black and White stripes - the colours of the hated Newcastle United. I redesigned the windows in Red and White panels of Velvet, borrowed some Sunlun Scarves from the local sports suppliers and slung them over the dummies in the window. I got a call from the boss on the Monday morning in Hull telling me that they had taken a staggering 2 and a half thousand - and I got an unbelievable 5 quid a week rise. Their football team wasn't just a team, it was their lives. The pubs were silent if they got beat and incredibly boisterous when they won. I saw the great Scottish international Jim Baxter (and drank with him in the early hours) as well as Brian Clough in his come-back game and the greatest Centre Half I ever saw in Charlie Hurley. To me it is sad to see Sunlun so poorly managed when they have such magnificent support but they will come back.
What does the person do who throws his pass in anger? Do they wake up in morning and ask for it back?
The club must have been poorly managed since 1973. When's this comeback gonna happen? The 40k supporters may look good on paper but when they're only doing half a game each it's equivalent to 20k part-time supporters over the whole game.
With their stadium and crowds, and the size of their away following which has to travel further than virtually every other club, the PL and other clubs would rather see them stay up than ourselves or the other main relegation candidates.
That is not in dispute. The point I am making is that they take their PL status for granted. Even the mighty Man Utd served time in the old Second Division when their wheels came off. Besides, I am sure that a lot of Championship clubs will enjoy the cash benefits they will derive from their Sunderland fixtures.
Seeing as they were the last team to play a game outside Division 1 when they first went down in 1958and have spent all but 30 years of their history in Division One, a total beaten by only3 or 4 clubs their fans probably feel that is where they belong. Unfortunately for them it is what happens on the pitch that matters.
After Newcastle had lost a Tyne/Wear derby match I saw some banter whereby a Sunderland fan said he was walking by St James Park a couple of days later, when he saw a Newcastle season ticket nailed to a tree. He thought "I'll have that". "I mean, you can never have too many nails, can you?"
