TGE sums it up very well in #11.

The problem Fredor is that SAFC have been so devoid of success that you are doing what you decry us for, in picking out segments of history.
No one is denying Sunderland were a success in the days of Queen Victoria, the Boer War and pre World War 1, as Newcastle United were themselves.
Unfortunately, that period or segment as you call them, up until 1914 was by a country mile, the best time in Sunderland's history.

Since the ending of hostilities of World War 1, your club has a won a total of Three Trophies in 97 years, which is not the history of a club that is remotely having regular success.

In modern day terms, neither club has won anything, but, I can say hand on heart that at least we gave it a go for a few years, that even the anti-Shepherd Fans have to acknowledge. It was a ride and a half that was amazing at times. Unfortunately for Sunderland fans, you've never been able to get near what we achieved for a period in the PL and unless there is a complete seed of change from Ellis Short I suspect, it will be a very long time coming. Don't hold your breath waiting, if I was you....

If you wanted success you would support a team from a big city like London or Manchester or Liverpool. Nowhere else had consistently HD successful teams. And even those teams have cycles of success and relatively poor pell.s

    Agree with you.

I've had many more lows than highs with Newcastle, but, I wouldn't swap the highs for anything.
For me, it was never about the winning and for those few years in the 90's, it was that unexpected, no one saw it coming.
We got a glimpse, a scent of what it could be like, and that's what a lot of NUFC fans yearn for again or at the least some ambition, if nothing else.
Winning would be nice, but, its not the be all and end all of supporting our clubs.

No doubt you're the same with Sunderland.

Both sets of fans will always can only look back in times long gone and that's the biggest shame of all.

Can you point out to me what segment I have picked out, my intention was to include start to present day and amount of success over that whole period, which to my mind is the only way to measure overall performance, Sunderland's success was achieved when we had a level playing field for everyone, once success was defined by the amount of wealth the club had, as is the situation now, as you have pointed out they were not so successful, sorry I cannot equate " giving it a go" with success

I would imagine if Sunderland had a generous benefactor like Ashley they would be enjoying more success !!!!!!!! , about time we all faced the truth, if Newcastle managed to bring a young local boy and develop him into a star, how long do you think he would remain at Newcastle ?

That's the trouble we don't bring any young players through. In fact Sunderland seem to be far better at grooming kids.

Fredor is right, neither of us have much hope of holding onto our youngsters, Aarons will be the next. Hell Sunderland can't even stop us taking theirs, never mind a top 6 club.

You were once the 'Bank of England' club. You still won nowt.

The fact is, Sunderland are below us on many levels. Always will be.
