This is the first season in years I haven't been up at dawn's crack to watch the Aussie race. I'm just not excited about the season atm. It's obvious the Mercs will walk both championships (I do hope Hammy gets WDC No. 3) so you know one of them will be winning most races. Then there's the fact that pretty much two teams are missing in Caterham and Marussia so there are hardly any cars on track and of those quite a few don't have the pace to make the championship very competitive from top to bottom. There's a lack of quality in the drivers up and down the grid as well. I'd much prefer rules/legislation to be introduced that brought all the cars/teams close together in terms of performance so that this climate of one team always developing the best package from the regs and walking it would be gone, Ferrari with MSC, Red Bull with Vettel and now Merc and Hamilton. Wouldn't it be much more exciting from a spectator's point of view if 5/6/7 teams (presuming those with lower budgets would still struggle a little bit) had pacey cars and were capable of winning regularly??

Sauber and STR are exciting this year. Although tbf I missed the practice sessions of Australia, just haven't been feeling it as much.

So I'm the only one who saw Kimi crash into Nasr which caused Maldonado to crash? I don't feel at all sorry for what happened to him because of that! There was so much more room to the left but once again he just thinks he's in the right and can force himself back on the track dangerously and get away with it!
And then has the nerve to blame Nasr.. Who was easily the best driver today.

To be fair, I haven't actually hated on Hamilton in ages! ;)
Nasr and Sainz both impressed me today actually. Plus I've always liked Alonso, Button, Perez, etc

The rookies were impressive today. Nasr showing just how average Ericsson is (like we needed reminding).

The great thing about voting for Rosberg was that while I got it wrong Hamilton won so I am more than happy. Sounds like it wasn't much of a race though, may or may not watch the highlights later. Alonso must be so pissed off about Ferrari.

    Definitely no coincidence.

Seb was very close to Newey and if Newey tells you that the sport is too restricted for his aero influence, then you listen. Why wait in a horrendous Renault engine and then habe to build Audi/VW power units from scratch?

Alonso had been thinking about moving for 12 months and within the closed circles people would have beem aware. I think Vettel realised this was his time- they only come calling once at Maranello.

The Renault takeover also comes at a time when Torro Rosso have put big effort and made massive strides to produce their best ever car and actually look RBR's equal so far in 2015.

This is all adding up now.

Who cares?? Great driver but on several occasions the man has shown himself to be an absolute arse without a hint of decorum

Just seen a few seconds of the Sky pre-show Simon Lazenby: "And Lewis Hamilton is heading to the grid"
"Would you liken him to Tiger Woods as he is in a white dominated sport?"
    Pmsl and switched it off.
Who can watch that mess, it's like a cult, they worship him!

What a surprise, Maldonado and Perez are involved in incidents/comings together. These two have to be the most accident prone drivers to ever grace a formula one race (along with Grosjean possibly, who, admittedly, cleaned his driving up last season)

Shame M Verstappen didn't finish, would have been nice for him to get points on his debut.

Watched the BBC 'highlights of the highlights' - is about all I can stand with their lead commentator, his voice is like nails down a chalkboard and he struggles to keep up, no idea how he got the job.

Awesome driver though. Who wouldn't want to see him in car he can do something with? A waste of his talent otherwise.

Sadly it is true that his talent does not extend to making good choices about what drives to take up.

Yeah he's a great driver but he makes consistently bad career choices (McLaren, twice!) and his attitude when he goes about things stinks, imo. Sure, all the great drivers have a bit of arrogance around them but Alonso just comes across as a bell end.

Well at this rate I can see him not actually driving for McLaren this time round. Cue Alonso/McLaren melt down II. No-one saw that coming(!).

<laugh> It's not like there's no precedent of ill-fatedness in this relationship is it?? That would be hilarious if never actually races the car this time but totally in character for Alonso. And to think they were going to give Jenswarn the old elbow.

Anyone who thinks Maldonado is to blame for his crash should probably get their brain checked. He had a great start and was probably going to finish top 5 (considering he was ahead of Nasr with what I assume is a better race car) if he didnt get crashed into and probably was on the way this season to prove that he's not as bad as people make him out to be

Right, watched the highlights (while I love 5am starts, it's the end of term and I love lie-ins more). Some thoughts:

    - 15 ****ing cars at the start. Great job Bernie!
    - Edwards and Coulthard had a bit of a mare, put it down to being out of practice
    - Graphics are nice, but they're so understated it makes the screen look slightly empty. Moving the lap-counter to the centre of the screen again would help.
    - The "take a drink every time a commentator refers to Max being young" game is banned, because the NHS budget can't cover all the liver transplants

As for the racing... lots of bad luck to go around (the Toro Rosso drivers, Lotus, the Force Indias, etc). Nasr impressive, so I hope he continues to do. Williams pit strategists still behind. Ferrari and Red Bull have swapped places on the grid as well as drivers.

Hope Rosberg is slightly faster at the next race...
