I think Mick is a very good championship manager, but realistically, if we got to the Premiership, I would not have great confidence that we could prosper under his leadership. Still, prefer we were there to test my opinion.
That's a tough one. On the one hand would you get rid of Mick if we looked like going down, doing what so many other teams do and sack the manager in the vain hope of staying in the prem? Or do you bite the bullet, accept the relegation and the financial reward that stupidly comes with failure and stick by the man who got us there, knowing full well he could do it again?
I don't understand how I can get castigated about wanting us to play like Barcelona when all I said was 'show attacking intent'. 6 players behind an attacking free kick has got **** all to do with any financial restraints on our team. Taking our main threat of the day (sears) off to tighten and make us more compact has got **** all to do with financial restraint. MM has been our saviour and there is no denying that BUT that doesn't mean you have to like and enjoy the way he goes about his job. Im not calling for him to go, I just have a different philosophy on the way a game should be played and its hardly fickle as I have said it for 90% of MM's mainly successful tenure.
" I think Mick is a very good championship manager, but realistically, if we got to the Premiership, I would not have great confidence that we could prosper under his leadership. " Agree with this. Failed at Sunderland, survived first season at Wolves but second a struggle. I think Mick would even admit this himself! Perhaps if Mings could sort out his positioning once and for all instead of often being 15 yards away from play we could use something a bit more progressive down the left. I'll get laughed at here, but in this sense we've missed S.Hunt. Sacking Mick is not an option as we'd pay out the 3 year extra deal he's signed, loads of players wouldn't fit under the new managers viewpoint, and the new manager would have sod all £££ to spend. So it really makes no sense, as the new guy would probably wanna offload 50% of our current crop to play more expansively. It'd be a nightmare. Whether people like it or not, Mick is going to be here until at least December next season - when if we make a shocking start to the season sure he could get booted then. But we're not a sacking club thank christ.
Sorry Westy, said it already on another thread but I don't know why a manager has to come in and rip a squad up just to be effective. He should come in, assess what he has at his disposal and make a team, formation and tactics that suits what he has. That is when you know you have somebody with tactical nous and the like, making it work from what you've got. Of course there will always be ins and outs at a club but you really shouldn't need to rip up a team that's been in the top six all season.
All managers have different ideas San Diego - for example, should we get a fluid manager like a Holloway, or the Brentford boss, how many of our lot would they want? A fluid manager would want centre backs who are cumfy on the ball for example, so bye bye Smith and the same with Chambers straight off the bat. Tabb Anderson etc would probably be gone too. New managers will always want 6 - 10 new players, and show many the door. Now as we know we have zero budget, Mick has taken two years to get not far off the squad he wants, I would like a summer of very little upheavel. Last summer is out first summer since Joe Royle days of not absolutely overhauling our squad, I have little doubt should Mick have another summer of signing players he wants whether on free or otherwise he would sign some very good players for us. Keane blamed Geography for players not coming to us! Doesn't seem a problem under Mick. Sure he's signed some crap - Banj for instance. However, free transfer wise he's snapped up some cracking players at this level - * Chambers * Berra * McGoldrick * Bru Also, there is the small matter of if Mick goes paying a massive compensation package.
Sorry but I think a lot of you are writing nonsense. What short memories some have. Mick isn't perfect but this season has been great up to now. Once again... 5 points off top and some are writing us off. If we don't make it this season I for one hope he stays and gets a little more financial backing next time. Replacing the manager could easily go either way and I don't think it's worth risking what's already been built.
I hope he is not given any money, he would only spunk it on more defensive midfielders!! Wr actually have some decent players and the makings of a good side, if only our stubborn manager would play these players in their natural positions!!
Oi Castro, what makes your ****ing opinion correct and ours nonsense? How are you right and us wrong? Its our ****ing opinion and we have a right to voice that opinion, yeah i want Mick bloody Mcarthy out but i never wanted him in, in the first place!!
I never said I'm definitely correct... Just my opinion too! You may be right and I'm saying nonsense. Time will tell. I'm in a bad mood tonight so no offence intended if that's how it came across. I'm frustrated as anyone with recent times... I just think it's worth remembering what we had before Mick and the progress made over the last 2 and a half seasons. Love or hate him you can't deny the progress.
Just to add... Mick must be the ideal manager for Marcus Evans. A guy who can stabilise a team and even push for a promotion on limited finance. Unless he looses the dressing room and the majority of fans I can't see him going anywhere.
I agree that we have the players to play differently. I remember during our good spell that the CB's were playing out from the back and there were fewer aimless punts. Don't know what changed. Hyam missing maybe?
Apart from Spanish, there isn't anyone who has continually said they want him to go, what many of us are saying is that he needs to be more flexible in the team he picks and how he gets them to play.....there is a massive difference between wanting a manager out and wanting him to try other things. If our early season tactics were still working as well now as they were then it wouldn't be to much of a problem, you can get away with a direct style of play if you are winning most weeks, however we are now not winning most weeks, a month or so ago we were nailed on for the play offs at least, could you say that now with the same confidence? Our current form does not have us winning enough games from the last ten to get in the top six (IMO), MM wants us to keep chipping away at the points howevever teams around and just below us are not chipping away they are taking chunks out of teams like us. My big fear is that as good as the season was upto the turn of the year that will all be overshadowed if we fail to get an extension to our season. I think this sums up everyone's feeling perfectly, success fuels expectation, even MM is not immune! http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/26999/mccarthy-frustrated-by-current-position#skipad
Well said hoppers! Castro, may i just add, the reason i want MM out is not a knee jerk reaction to recent results, i have always disliked the man and the brand of football he serves up. I still dont understand why he changed from a winning formula and why he wont go back to that winning formula. Castro, i dont like the guy, never have and for me, the sooner he is gone the better, guess many felt like that about Rk and PJ, its just a personal thing i guess and to be honest, Mick dont help himself with his arrogance and stubborness!
Not his fault McGoldrick got injured though was it! It is noticeable that since he has been sidelined our results and form have dipped badly or is this just a coincidence?
Look the way I see it and I was there on Saturday, Murphs should have buried that simple chance and if he had we would be sitting pretty in the Top 6! It's all fine margins and Mick can't be blamed for the Murphy miss. Where I agree is that he shouldn't have subbed Sears but should have subbed Murphy instead. That way we would have kept the big man/small man combo up front with Freddie running beyond Wood. Tabb played really well probably our best player, Skuse was his usual anonymous self and Parr was a real terrier in Midfield. Yes we really should have won given that we dominated especially second half but it just wasn't meant to be. You get games like that so we just have to knuckle down and move onto Boro with the same enthusiasm as we showed against brentford.
I get it that the slump doesn't look good for Mick but totally agree with Warky that he can't be blamed for great chances not taken, particularly that Murphy miss. If that had gone in and we won the game we wouldn't be discussing poor tactics etc. I believe we will turn the corner again, just hope it's sooner than later.
