    great decision!

    he put in a "captain's performance" when we were 2-0 down to wigan last season to get us back on level terms

    Also him being captain shows his commitment to the club and might help convince players like Enrique and Jonas to stay.

    Natural choice. Strong presence, great rapport with the fans, contributes at both ends of the pitch, passionate (but almost always in a constructive way), and his hair is a universal motivator

    Barton early today talked about Colo for captain on his twitter.

    Good choice IMO. Well respected by all the players, an ever present pretty much, generally keeps a cool head, committed to the club and has a real desire to succeed. Hopefully that means he'll be here for a good few years. And as someone said, this may put a smile on the faces of the other two amigos. Colo could use his captains influence on Jose.

    Don't know about it being tactical ( he's got the armband on merit ) but it'll certainly help keep the amigo's together.

    Just noticed this on the Chronicle site, great decision. Colo is a real quality player, hope it can convince Jonas and Jose to stay aswell.

    Not happy with Coloccini as Captain he would have been 6th choice for me all these below ahead of him.

    Ben Arfa
    Tiote
    Barton
    Enrique
    Saylor

    Ben Arfa & Tiote should have been appointed Captain & Vice Captain in my opinion.

    Hes young and hasnt played much. I agree with Tiote as Captain. But he will probably be vice if Barton goes

    Saylor + Barton I agree with, Tiote maybe but in a few seasons once he's been here longer. Agree with GRB though - Ben Arfa as captain wouldn't be the right move. He's hardly played, he hasn't been around the team as much as everyone else, and he's going to be spending his games on the ball tearing open defences, creating goals and scoring goals - I can't see him doing that and captaining the team at the same time! Just look at Barton - when he was captain it ruined his whole game, in my opinion.

    A central defender is a brilliant choice for captain.

    We'll have to agree to disagree; Ben Arfa will be my favourite player in the side this season, has been one of my favourites in the world for several years now, and I commend him for the mutual loyalty between he and the club. Having said that, he's only made a handful of appearances, is the quiet type, and spent most of last season rehabbing in France -- not with the club (was good for his rehab, but doesn't set him up for a leadership role just yet). Maybe in the future he'll grow into the position within the squad, but I think it'd be premature, and a bit of a slap to the face of players that have played major roles for a few years now.
