Sorry guys I thought music was universal and who you liked what songs you liked from whoever from wherever didn't matter and from someone who likes music spanning 6 decades I don't care where it is from or who its by if it sound good to me then fine. Award ceremonies whether music or film are nothing but backslapping exercises for a chosen few and mean nothing to me and though some of my choices of music may appal some of you (or even all of you) the songs mirror certain events in my life both good and bad, hence John Denver, The Beatles, Celine Dion, Bee Gees, and others, each song I like reflects certain periods of my life and is a memory of those instances. Rant over
One wag has commented that it's the first and last time you'll ever get to say: "Did you see the Fall at the Brits?"
Very good. On another note, why was there no Lifetime Achievement last night? There has always been one hasnt there?
Sam Smith isn't my cup of tea, but he's hard to avoid, he's won pretty much every award going in the past year, along with having one of the best selling records in the world in 2014.
I had genuinely never heard of him or seen his face until last night. I listen to R4, 6Music, XFM and Talksport and I've never heard him on either of them. When he first appeared on screen I thought it was John Newman, who I'm no fan of btw but I once saw on Jools Holland.
They normally have an 'Outstanding Contribution to Music' award, but for some reason haven't had one since Blur got the award it in 2012.
The Oustanding Contribution to Music Award is ridiculous anyways. The Spice Girls won it, whereas acts such as The Smiths, The Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Clash and The Kinks haven't. In fact, none of those have picked up a single Brit at all. Must say - if Blur and Oasis have won it, why not Pulp, Stone Roses, Suede or Happy Mondays?
Did Geldof win it? Outstanding contribution to charitable causes yes, but music? I despise Weller but I appreciate some do like him. I'd have thought Morrissey and Marr should be way ahead of any of those.
The Smiths, The Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Clash and The Kinks have never picked up a single Brit at all.
People confuse their opinion for fact when it comes to music, just because its not your cup of tea doesn't take away from their talent. People like Sam Smith and Paloma Faith have incredible voices, but I can't say I'm a fan of any of their music. Similarly, Ed Sheerans performance was excellent, anyone who's played music before can appreciate the skill in constructing a track live using a loop pedal, but again I wouldn't buy his album. In my opinion the most undeserving award was the Foo Fighters winning over First Aid Kit or The War On Drugs.
Maybe it is opinion, but to be honest it's hard to deny that the stuff in the charts is utter ****e. There are a lot of good bands knocking around who are barely getting a sniff, the media can control who and what they want in the charts and that's what they do. Radio 1 want **** in the charts, then they'll get **** in the charts by plugging it and plugging it. Noel Gallagher summed it up the other day saying he can't say he isn't in to pop music but the Smiths were pop music, Sex Pistols were pop music, but now the difference is the pop music now is ****, and to be honest I think that is a fact.
It's a good thing that proper bands don't get a sniff at the Brits. Long may it continue. **** the Radio 1 playlist.
