Yep, have to agree there SBC. I too did not enjoy the squashed-up atmosphere at all. Sadly, much better to watch this great festival of horseracing on TV. Sandown Park is my idea of a damn-near perfect racecourse, but I'm biased, it was my local track along with Kempton.
I must say I'm amazed with a capital A at SBC's revelation that he takes the Guardian at the weekend. That wouldn't be the natural choice of reading material for a fully paid up member of the George Osborne fan club would it? As far as the festival goes it definitely doesn't need to be extended and I can't see it ever being reduced from the current 4 day format. I'd take out the mares hurdle and replace it with a veterans steeplechase.
You get a much better view on the tele anyways. I remember reading Patrick Veitch's book, and he laughs at trainers who watch races through there binoculars rather than just watching the big screens. And I agree it is rather stupid
I'm making my first trip to Chelts this year on gold cup day, can't wait. That was until I saw all your comments regarding it!!
Talal take no notice of the negative comments of attending the festival in person. There is no better sporting spectacle, and the negative remarks do our sport no favours. Put the tv remote down and get off your arse and support this sport that you purport to love
Cheltenham does not need my support, they get thousands through the gate regardless. I go to plenty other race meetings throughout the year, and over the years I've bet fortunes on horses, which the bookies pay tax on. So i do support racing, you don't have to go to the festival every year to help out
