Southampton have completed the signing of Chelsea youngster Jack Cork for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old England Under 21 international is the Saints' first signing this summer. Cork has come through the ranks at Chelsea, the club he joined as a nine-year-old, but never made a first-team appearance for the Blues. Instead he went on a string of loan moves. He spent the last campaign on loan with Burnley where he made 40 appearances and scored three goals. He will now be back in the Championship with Southampton next season. He said: "Iâm excited really. It all started to happen this morning, I came down and met the chairman and the manager today and Iâm really happy to get it sorted. âIt was a massive decision to make. I had another year left at Chelsea, but Iâve been wanting to get away for a while and have been waiting for the right move to present itself. "The chance to come to Southampton came along, and having known the manager and having been here before and knowing some of the guys, it just felt like it was the right move for me.â Cork has previously been on loan with Watford and Coventry, and has also played on loan at St Mary's for six months in 2008.
Tremendous and important signing. His flexibility in terms of position provide us with multiple cover options. we need two more now.....
I was thinking about how to celebrate the signing of Jack Cork? Hmmmm, Cork. What might be fitting? Cork.. Cork, no I just can't think of anything!
Midfield I think OROW, plus cover at the back. He played right back for the under 21s on occasion so he mustt be pretty comfortable most places. I can see him and Schneiderlin running the midfield with Hammond and Chaplow fighting for places if they are both still here in August. Quality signing I think and a real show of intent.
No more journeymen for the saints. He has good pedigree right age and exactly the type of player needed will fit in great with other quality young players already here he will adapt seamlessly into our squad and is versatile. It is the type of signing that reinforces Nicola and Nigels ambitions for us.
Thanks OptimisticSaint. I think we are probably about three players away from a very strong side. If we could add a left back, a centre back and a striker I would be delighted. However, I think we will probably only add two more. Maynard or Adiah would be amazing front men as they have tonnes of speed and I would definitely swap Harding for Konchesky or Riise. The only position I cannot think of a suitable choice is a left-sided centre back who is good in the air. Perhaps Adkins is convinced Jaidi has one season left in him.
Sniders and Corky together in the centre of midfield with Hammond & Chappers as back up - nice, very nice!
