I am the other way, just think O`Shea is more versatile but doesnt really excell in any position, Brown is a better defender for me (when fit), and lets be honest, it is being quoted that Brown came for 1 Million, that cant be bad even if he is ****.

To be fair, I'd probably accept O'Shea here. Would be cover for RB, CB and LB.

Fit and on form, Brown is pretty good but I doubt you'll see him fit and on form for much of this 4 year contract. Why is it such a long deal?

Agree, just the player we need if I'm honest. First mackem signing I wish we had got instead.

Taking on board both sides of the argument regarding the abilities of Wes Brown and indeed his value as a signing to Sunderland, I feel a very salient point has been overlooked so far.

He's got a heed like a baked bean.

If he was crocked though surely he would have failed the medical, but knowing our history he will be injured in the 1st game and have to retire lol

as for the contract, not a clue, but he will be 34-35 when its up, so he can retire and it may have a coaching role in after he retires, but no idea tbh.

Will just have to see how it goes I suppose, is he expected to be a starter or just rotation/cover like he was at Man U? Presumably he was told he'd get more games otherwise he wouldnt have made the move.

blackcatsteve - Very clever use of the stats there. I found it very amusing you even tried this on. You remind of Derek and his maths! You see you 've managed to include the stats I mentioned earlier when he got a run at right back and boosted his appearances right up (made 52 that season (2007-08) - most in his whole career by quite some way) Really it's best to judge him on his most recent season. 15 appearances, only 7 in the league. Indeed his average appearances over the last three seasons were only about 19 appearances a year in all competitions. Not a lot given they play 55-60 games a season. In the league he averages 11 a season over the last 3 seasons. That's less than a third of the games. Definetly, without a shadow off a doubt, a bit part player.

When all you mackems are down at the pub watching the matches, you should stick around a little longer and maybe watch some footy from outside of England too -- might learn something. I'm definitely not the only one around here who watched Lille or the French national team this season, and before we were linked to their players even

Or injured and couldnt get back in the team with the likes of Vidic, Ferdinand, The twins, Gary Neville, Evra, Smalling, Evans all fighting for places as well.

He cost 1 million, you cant get a lot with 1 million these days, especailly not someone with that experience and winning mentality, if he is a complete flop we havnt lost much, if he is a success, he will move us up the league.

Bramble is probably a sore point with you lot, but he was great for us last season (apart from 1-2 games, but show me a defender that never ever makes mistakes), and he only cost 1 million and even our fans were thinking, oh please god no at the time.

you just never know, a change of scenery and some cold North East sea Breeze may do the lad wonders, or he may freeze his knackers off and wish he had never made the move lol

I thought his fee was undisclosed? Anyway I'm sure he's pretty cheap at 31/32. I'm not knocking it if he can stay fit. He's not terrible by any stretch but he is error and injury prone. Hence Fergie never really cemented him in as first xi. My worry would be if you get into a Mensah situ whereby he's constantly in and out of the team due to injuries. We seem a sucker for injury prone players up here. I saw some suggesting to give Hargreaves a trial. Madness, the lad is fooked for life. The surgeon has moreorless said, Ferguson has indicated it several times, even he has hinted at it. Why not sign someone who isn't fooked? To be fair if they (O Shea/Brown) were coming in to compete with the other defenders then you'd be fairly happy. But the suspicion has to be they wanted guaranteed first team football. Is O Shea better than Bardsley? Is Brown better than Bramble/Turner? If I was a Sunderland fan I'd be livid they haven't signed a left back and a creative midfielder to play alongside Cattermole. Every Mackem mate I have pinpointed those two areas as needing improvement along with strikers to support Gyan. They have bought strikers (Wickham I rate), but signed neither of the other two. The midfielders signed or linked with have all been unathletic chuggers - Larrsson, Gardner, Gibson, Vaughan. Instead of buying loads why not buy quality.

It's the same with us. I like the lads we've signed but if we sign one more injury prone player I'm going to be extremely worried.

On their day, yes Brown and O`Shea are better than the ones we have imo anyway, I am not a great Turner fan, Bramble was great for us, but still something niggling in the back of my mind that says he is a disater waiting to happen (hope i am wrong on that though), Bardley is a battler and a tryer, which is what we want to see in the NE, skill wise, pace wise, crossing wise he leaves a lot to be desired though.

Mensah had a dodgy back and needs surgery, hence why we didnt buy him outright, fantastic the season before last when he played, not so good last season and played less due to the injury, as far as i know Browns injuries are just minor niggly ones (i may be wrong though) but hopefully not something that is detrimental and he keeps getting over and over again.

and yes i did embelish those stats lol was worth a try.

Good bit of business for mackems, cheap solid defender with bags of experience.

    Better than Simpson.

blackcatsteve - it's hard to pull the wool with us at the moment to be fair, due to our ownership we can smell bullcrap from miles away! I've just posted on another thread, I do think Sunderland could maybe have done better by getting O Shea and gone for Carlos Cuellar instead of Brown. Younger at 28/29 and a very good defender for 3m. To be honest I'd like us to go for Cuellar but I'd be worried we'd be stopping Taylors progress who is now the right age for a centre back and has all the attributes.
