Well with both Murray and Varney linked now I think it's safe to say that Marcus is prepared to give a bit of funding to Mick to make sure we stay top six. I would probably prefer Murray but obviously Mick is looking to bolster the attack and that's a good thing, whatever happens.
Its an interesting issue. A big man to relieve some of the pressure on Murphy is probably a priority but on the flip side he is probably our only undroppable player currently. Give him a rest and he may lose momentum, or keep on playing him and risk injury. If is was to be a loan signing I would prefer a younger player with an option to sign in the summer but I couldn't put a name to that player. Just to have to trust MM to judge the problem well but that is what he is paid to do.
Agree Tractorbhoy. Whilst Murray is a good player not sure he's plays the big man role. Varney and Chaplow were very handy players in the Championship a few years back, if Mick manages to get that out of them again we could have a couple of decent players on our hands. Varney could be the kind of player to take a bit of pressure off Murphy. I have to say whilst Hunt has done half decent I'm not sure why we've signed him
Murray is a decent player and will score goals in this division it must be worth taking a punt on him rather than placing all of our hopes on Murphy. I am worried like everyone else that if Murphy gets a knock who do we turn to with the system we play? There are no goals coming from midfield which is truly shocking but it the cracks have been papered over while Murphy is banging them in! Murray would be the perfect man IMO.
I don't think the Murray thing will come off, no way will we pay prem wages for somebody as cover, the Varney one is probably more likely. Re Chaplow, what I like about it is that we have got him training with us so we can judge his attitude and how he fits with the spirit within the squad. if Mick then feels he could be a problem its a no thanks, but if he is happy to be a squad player then fine.
I don't see how Murray would fit in to be honest. With 4-3-3 McGoldrick/ Sears/ Murphy would be a very good potential front 3 and 4-4-2 Murphy with either Sears/ McGoldrick is a good front 2. Sears was quality at Fulham, and if McGoldrick can get his form back they will be our main 3. If N.Hunt is injured however we could do with one more. I guess can never have too many and you never know what injuries are around the corner sadly. Get the feeling if he got a run in the side Ambrose may fire in a few, however, is the rest of his game better than Bru/ Bishop? Could be a bit of a Keith Andrews scoring but not offering everything else required? Bishop and Bru between them = one goal. They really need to get into positions more.
I'm sure we could fit a player of Murrays quality in. He'd probably come in to play alongside Murphy rather than as a back up to him though as I don't think he plays the big man role. Then I think we've just bought Sears in who is showing promise and it may stunt his progress here. Ambrose has been a real slow burner here but for me has shown more wide right than anyone I've seen since McCarthy has been here although it doesn't take alot. Not sure he's got enough about him to play centrally ahead of Bish and Bru but certainly can get in out wide
On a side note it would be interesting to find out if Micks teams have ever had many goalscorers from midfield. I seem to recall he turned our very own Tommy Miller from a goalscoring midfielder to a DM
