Not a big Best fan as I've noted in earlier threads so this is music to my ears. However I don't think I've seen enough of Long to make a judgement. He did score a lot of goals last year, and I think he had a knack of scoring when it mattered. I'm not fussed if we lose all three of Shola, Lover and Best. If we got rid of those three and replaced them with Long plus one more I'd be happy with our lot.

Just because he has had 1 good season in his career, what makes people think Long is worth £5 mill + Best?

I would be a bit annoyed if we signed him for what we supposedly have offered, I would have no confidence in him stepping up in the Premiership, the last time he was in the Prem, he had a 1 in 5 record. 50 games, 5 goals.

Think we should be looking at better players, Long was decent in the championship but looks quite lost on the international stage. Were at the point where we need strengthen our team in order to guarentee top 10 and potentially push for europe. Is Long any better than Best? I dont personally think so and would be a poor deal for us.

He scored 27/28 goals last season, so he must have played about 108-112 matches! He must be fit as, that lad!

He would be my last choice, not good enough in my opinion, not a goal scorer which is what we need

25 goals last season and before that he's never even got to double figures. No thanks.

    (200 apps, 54 goals)

Players do peak sometime throughout his career.
    He is still young and

would you judge Gareth Bale by his performances before this season or this seasons performances. hmmm.

I would sign him just because he is better than what we have

Don't you think that Craig Mackail-Smith would be a better call than Long?

    Cost less too.

Trappatoni (imo opinion a better manager than Capello) rates Long much higher than Best. That is good enough for me.

Also, the Irish-born lads (rather than plastic paddies like Best) have a really good record in english football. Give the lad a chance. Remember when we had a chance to sign Kevin Phillips from Watford, but went for someone with a higher profile? Can't remember who it was, but we missed out badly there, when he went to the SMB's, for £750,000 or so, and spent the next 5 seasons scoring goals for fun!

I think he's already been transferred. Agree though, dont see why we should be getting rid of Best, he was given a chance to prove himself at PL level and did so very well.

By that criterion, Michael Owen would be a great buy, based on his career goals, rather than what he has done recently. Also, Tierry Henry's scoring record was pretty average when he played for Juventus. Using your logic, Wenger should never have gone for him, but look what happened when he did!

Also remember that Long never played football at all until he was about 12-13, and was played as a winger until the last 18 months. So he is obviously a quick learner.

For my part, I would prefer a star in the ascendency than one whose better days are in the past.

I'd prefer someone who has scored consistently for more than one season (recently, obviously not talking about Owen etc who have good overall records) to lead our line, to be quite honest. Why this lad is being rated at 10million after one good season in the Championship is beyond me.

I'll agree that I like him more than Fabio, but regardless of whose better between Long and Best, Trappatoni is selecting the player who plays week-in, week-out over the guy who's had more limited action for the past season and a half at Newcastle. Oh wait, another thing Fabio still hasn't learned about squad selection.

Carrol was rated higher after a less impressive season in the championship. And he was hardly what could be called prolific up to that point
