What has this bloke actually achieved and why he is suddenly the front runner for every available job? It's quite bizare actually, because all I remember him doing was win a few games, talk a load of **** and his team got thumped a load of times. Just how many mates does he have in the media or is the media just so desperate to hype up any English manager? The PL is now even richer than before, yet clubs are time and time again are looking to appoint this guy. Would not shock me if the media link Sherwood to Arsenal when Wenger leaves. So can anyone tell me why Sherwood is so highly rated now?
You have already answered your own question in your post, he is young and English, and the English media have been waiting for a good young manager for 20 years. So they hype up anyone they think might be that golden ticket they have been waiting for, sadly sherwood aint ever going to be that man
I'm not Sherwood's biggest fan, by any means, but he actually won a decent number of Premier League games. That's something that a lot of managers really struggle with. Getting Adebayor playing for him and bringing through some youth players has probably bought him some attention, too. Both seem fairly applicable to Villa, as Benteke's form has been poor since his injury and they've got quite a productive academy. The other big reason would be the alternative options. Villa don't seem to have many big names banging down their door. Who's he really up against?
With a decent team, almost anyone could win a few premier league games. what good managers do is make the team play above their level. Sherwood is not a good manager in that sense.
I suppose it has the same answer but it shocks me more that hoddle is being linked to top jobs! (Except for the young bit obviously)
ex-footballers will rarely make decent managers. most of them just aren't intelligent enough. all they have is experience and a reputation, which makes owners think they might be decent.
I could see this happening to be fair. Personally aside from him shouting a lot, publicly criticising his players and somehow miraculously helping Adebayor gain some form, I don't think he's the right candidate. Spurs lost all their big games under his management and Villa have got an uphill task to stay in this division so I don't think he has the right character to influence the players. I could be proven wrong, though, and if he does, full credit to him. I suppose in some ways it could be seen as a gamble worth taking.
I agree, I could also be wrong but I feel they need either a bigger name that the demotivated squad can rally around, or someone with greater experience (be that in the Championship, Prem or a European league)
Hoddle is actually a decent coach. It was his Elaine drury bonkers pseudo esoterical nonsense and the comments about disabled people that derailed his managerial career. I think he could be a decent manager for somebody like Villa or Sunderland, who look like they might dispose of poyet soon. Sherwood though, other than some half decent youth work has done basically **** all. If he keeps villa up then the media will be creaming themselves. But for me he is the definition of average.
IMO Hoddle was a very good coach, but seeing as hes been out of the game for about 15 years, its puzzling how he's linked with lots of top level jobs in the country despite not showing any signs he's kept track on all the latest developments in the game.
Aren't 99.999% ex-footballers? Mourinho and AVB are huge exceptions. Wenger played at a low level - is that what you mean, top footballers rarely make top managers, and, if so, I see that? Like Hoddle, they don't seem to understand the limitations of most players. Hoddle apparently liked to embarrass players on the training field - not a good recipe for getting the best from them.
I agree, wasn't saying that it never happens, just that it doesn't follow that a great player will necessarily be a great manager. The ones you mention are/were certainly both.
O Ohh I see, totally agree with you - there's no god given right why a great player will make a great manager - just look at Lambert and Keane. I mean does anyone think Gascoigne should be a manager, just because he was an awesome player?!? Its the thing that annoyed me about people putting Giggs forward (and Henry forward) to manage after Ferg and when Wenger goes, I mean surely they need to learn the management ropes 1st before trying one of the toughest jobs around - following a club legend...
