Yep that's right, the US military spends 20 billion bucks per year to air condition tents in Iraq and Afghanistan according to retired Brigadier General Steven Anderson. He also estimates than a 1000 troops have lost their lives supporting fuel convoys.

This is more than NASA's budget. Money well spent?

Here's the US Army planning committee that signed off on the deal:

Surely this is a bit over the top. There will be no end of officials who'll defend the outlay, but can they be serious?

Well the heat in a tent in Iraq or Afganistan would be extreme without air con. Plus im sure each tent needs the air filtered to remove dust and sand.

and you have to factor in that someone like haliburton was the sole bidder on the contract so they can charge what they like.

MAybe they should have a word with the locals and ask them how they've managed to live and work without a spare 20Billion lying around - might save them a bob or two.

<laugh> Good point TenG. I wonder if the Russians spent that kind of money on their tents in Afghanistan?

Do you really think the US Amry will spend time making mud huts in a war zone?
