I used to have it on Video but got my Mrs to get me a copy on DVD for Christmas. Finally got round to watching it recently and still loved every minute of it. Narrated by David Baddiel and loved Baddiels dig at Branfoot which was something like "It was an easy mistake to make leaving out your best player". It was good to watch Matt progressing through his Career and all those fantastic Goals. He was still playing for us when it was made so his last goal for us which if Iremember correctly was the last league goal scored at The Dell does not feature. Does anyone else have this DVD/Video? Also what is your favourite Matty goal?
Emotionally, the last one at The Dell - you just couldn't write that. My other favourite, rather than his best (though it was F'in good) is the little twist and turn he does without actually running to beat two United defenders, before making Peter Schmeichel look a numpty with a deft lob from just outside the box. It was like a loft wedge shot over a bunker. For me that goal summed everything up about him. Slow, lazy and sublime
Yeah, that one is in my top 3....but for sheer nonchelance, his third against Norwich gets the nod for me, closely followed by the one against Newcastle that always gets overlooked by his other goal in the same game, the one where from the edge of the box he takes a knock down on his thigh before languidly volleying the ball perfectly into the top corner.
The last one at The Dell for all the obvious reason including the fact that it was a sublime bit of skill given that his shorts were a bit tight! Two other ones though that rarely get a mention. One was at Old Trafford, a side foot volley from a Pahars cross which was described by Barry Davis as a "tap-in". This just summed up Tiss, he just made things look too easy. It was in fact a hard hit cross and a hugely difficult skill. The other one, also against Utd but at the Dell, a looping cross over Schmeichel fell to Tiss at the far post, the merest of dummies and Schmeichel moved to cover the his near post while Tiss had (another) tap in to an empty net. Great video. Shame they never got round to adding his later goals. I am constantly raving about Tiss to my kids and eventually I got hold of a video recorder and showed them. They were truly stunned.
There's a few seasons not included 'Unbelievable'. They really need to release an updated version. My favourite also has to be the lob against Schmeichel. Or maybe the left foot screamer against Forest, or maybe the second goal of his hat-trick against Norwich, (the mazy run) or...
There was also one of his penalties shown in the DVD against Blackburn where Alan Shearer said something to Matt just before he took it. In his auto biography Taking Le Tiss Matt explains. Tim Flowers and Alan Shearer were on the Blackburn team coach chatting about what would happen if Matt got a penalty. "Flowers said I think he will try something different with me and hit it down the middle". So what did Shearer say to Matt before he took it? He said "Whatever you do don't hit it down the middle"
I watched this video most days as a kid absolutely in awe of the legend. He is the reason I support Saints. Favourite goal is the second in the 2-1 win against Newcastle. Its absolutely magical. A regret is that I never got to watch him in the flesh. I teach 10 year olds in Dublin and they asked me why I support Southampton so I put on a compilation of his best goals. Kids were going mad, couple claimed he was better than Ronaldo! So there are now some new members of the Le Tiss fanclub in Dublin
I think the Unbelievable video was made in 95 so doesn't even include the United lob goal. The Sky premier league 100 goal club show lets you watch those post Unbelievable goals and there are some real gems despite the increased waste line. The video definitely needs to be updated, perhaps we should make it a not606 campaign. During the time of that film under the management of Alan Ball I have no doubt even with my red and white specs that he was the best player in the world at that moment. Sadly nagging injuries took their toll, but that was his peak
Here's a short clip of England v Romania from 1994 that I found on YouTube a while ago. If you press play you'll see a nearly moment from Le Tiss. I wonder how different his international career might have been if that shot had just dipped under the bar.
I remember that well... If only. We'd still have wasted his talent anyway. He couldn't have kept Steve Stone out the team.
The hat trick against Norwich kills me every time. Oh how I remember that moment against Romania, and oh how I hated that twit Venables (and still do).
Got the tape and two copies of the DVD. Someone bought me the second DVD not knowing I already had it. It's a spare.
TSS - I'd like to buy your spare DVD if it's for sale please. I only have the Video version. Drop me a PM if it is available.
If it's the Norwich game I remember, he didn't even play well that day. I am sure that's the one that he gave the ball away so many times in and then popped up with the hat-trick.
