http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...e-of-cost-of-Emirates-wrecked-dream-deal.html Seems wenger had Ronaldo lined up to sign for us as a teenager and supposedly our move to the emirates stopped it happening due to financial restrictions. According to Ronaldo's agent. How different things may have been over the last decade if he had come to us instead of Utd! For all his faults you can't deny Wenger can see potential in young players!
Thought I'd post this after seeing it as recently there was the revelation that the only reason we didn't sign di Maria as a teenager is we couldn't get a work permit.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...ansfers-they-missed-out-on.html?frame=3102150 A selection of others we missed out on!
There was this really fit bird I saw at a bar yesterday. I mean model hot, flawless, 10/10. She was giving me the eyes, she couldn't deny my animal instincts. I could've easily got her number but; the lights were too bright, my favourite song wasn't playing, the air was too humid, I still had half a pint in my hand, the floor was too sticky to walk over to her......
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, man u paid a hefty price for him, 12million for an 18 year old 10 years ago would be like paying 20-25 million in the current market. Could you imagine the outcry if wenger went out and spent 20-25 million on an 18 year old just now, fans would be protesting outside the stadium. Hell plenty were moaning about the guy we signed from Poland. The only difference was our stock was higher then, and we were the best team in the country. Plus I remember people thinking ronaldo was a waste of money, with no end product and doing far to many stepovers. Ronaldo turned out to be a world beater, but how many time have you heard about this 18 year old that's going to be the next big thing, and a few years later he has fallen off a cliff.
Thank you Enigma. Arsene has invested in a lot of youth players and people still complain. Albeit, a few of them never make it at Arsenal but not every youngster is going to be the next Messi and Ronaldo. A lot of people want ready made stars at Arsenal but in today's oil baron market, it's difficult for arsenal to compete. I'm not making excuses for Arsene because to be honest, I'm tired of hearing on the players he "almost" got. We forget how many stars he made. Hopefully, he can replicate that same eye for talent now.
For all the players he has missed out on he's found some real gems too, was just reading the article and it reminded me just how good of an eye for talent wenger has.
lol I keep seeing this from Wenger, every decent player that surfaces, a few years later we get a "I was gonna sign him" from Arsene. Wenger seems to be the "You shoulda seen the one that got away" kinda guy. It was <---------------------------------------------> thiiiiiis big.
I read some time ago that it was because of the Portuguese connection at OT when Carlos Queiroz was there that persuaded Ronaldo to sign for UTD
The article speaks about that but Ronald's agent says the year prior to utd getting him he expected him to join Arsenal. He had a lot of praise for Dein but says Arsenal couldn't up there offer due to the financial restraints of the stadium move but otherwise Ronaldo was happy to join us and wenger wanted him.
Didnt know about this. I know Phil Thompson admitted Liverpool could have signed him for about £8m but passed on him lol. Another thing that's sometimes forgotten is we probably wouldnt have bought Ronaldo if Ronaldinho had signed for us. It is all ifs and maybes, but I'm certainly glad the way things worked out.
Yeah it's interesting how the little decisions can go on to mould the future at a club, or at least part of there fortunes. And it works both ways, look at Torress to Chelsea, an example in the opposite direction!
Yeh and so many United fans gutted we missed out on Ronaldinho and how we'd replace Beckham at the time. And tbf with players also. Who knows what would have happened to Henri if he'd stayed stuck out on the left wing for Juve.
Wenger also had the chance to sign Pele,Zico,Van Basten, Van Basten's granny, Drogba,Yaya Toure, John Terry and John Terry's cocaine selling dad.
Meh Emirates Schmemirates. For every potential deal that could have gone through we probably saved by not being able to afford the *chortle* Bebe's of this world. Lets be honest, for every five youth prospects we buy you're lucky if one makes it. I reckon the Emirates move actually saved us money in this regard.
You saved a fortune on not buying Ronaldo for sure. Think of how much worse the past 10 yeas would have been if you had. Probably be playing in the Vauxhall conference by now
