A "must read" owing to the article being put out publicly online, not on a Gills site, which I felt should be seen here. Personally, I'm not at all "anti-Scally" - but who the author is; where he got some of his information etc. were questions which I found interesting, & I (correctly) believed that there would be some subsequently interesting exchanges afterwards. Unfortunately, there has been no light shone upon the author at all. Anyway, I think that this site can only benefit from discussions, information & for airing opinions, regardless if one agrees with them or not. Sorry that I caused you to blaspheme & lose five minutes of your precious time ... lol
Whoops.....didn't mean to blaspheme Still wasted 5mins though. And if you aren't particularly anti-PS then I mis-read your intentions. I thought labelling that a "must read" meant you pretty much agreed with its sentiments or suggestions. Wrong eh?
The article certainly opened my eyes, our chairman is the only one out of 92 league clubs that lives abroad, who'd have ever guessed that. And as for the fact that without other income streams he runs the club as a business, what can he expect apart from the scorn of all fans. People in most walks of life make mistakes but is that acceptable from someone who runs a football club, most right minded fans know that chairman of other clubs never get it wrong so why is it only ours that does. I did find the grudging acceptance of the part he played in our promotion to the championship a little strange, surely everyone by now must be aware that only bad results and relegation are attributed to the chairman, not promotions. brb, removing this thread would only play into the hands of the demented author of this utter diatribe.
The article has certainly ruffled a few feathers. It DOES mainly concern itself with 'negatives' - and gives little credit for Scally's attributes as an astute businessman. It IS painful to read some bad publicity for the Club. ( I have said that the article could have dug up a lot more, worse dirt. ) The author is most probably NOT a fan of Gillingham - which makes it all the easier to write in the vein of the article. This bias goes on all the time. I'd be surprised if any fan of The Gills would rush to look for good things to say about Swindon, Millwall, Steve Evans, McCammon etc. -- because there is enough 'negatives' to either feel aggrieved, or which would make 'sensational journalism.' The fact that the author has chosen to produce the article might suggest that there is a more sinister agenda - directed to humiliate Mr.Scally - therefore the article was hardly going to heap praise for Scally's ability to, thus far, ensure the existence of the Club. BUT ---- and this is the painful bit, The negative sentiments in the article is supported by facts, and / or sentiments that illustrate the thoughts of non Gills fans. The article is not the first. 2nd or 3rd that I have read - which have latched on to 'negatives' that have involved our Chairman. It is how the media works! If there wasn't something upon which to sink their teeth, the press would pick on another unfortunate victim. It is 20 years since Cantona 'kung-fu' kicked a Crystal Palace fan - but that story won't go away. Mr.Scally may not be in the same sort of limelight, but unfortunately his history, current lifestyle and lack of match attendance wont allow him to be forgiven - perhaps in the same way that Gills fans wouldn't forgive any of the names I listed in this post.
