We would be in a much better position had we spent the Soton money on better players (incl Mario as well). We don't need to spend big in order to achieve success - Coutinho, Sturridge, Can, Moreno, Sakho (relatively inexpensive) have all cost less than £15m each (except Sakho). Look at the squad Atletico Madrid and Dortmund assembled - both teams compete against the biggest teams in world football and have succeeded. Whilst I do believe big finances is required for long term success, short term success can be achieved on a budget (as proven by the two teams above).
