I don't like to say this but Gerrez seems to be right in that signing your loaned players only makes you stand still.

Everton signed Barry and Lukaku so their first team stood still while everyone else around them improved.

Lukaku is a good player, I don't think he's worth £28m. Could and should Everton have got a forward for £10m and then used the rest of that money to shore up the CB and CM positions?

I don't like loans for that very reason but the thing is, I also think Everton would be a much worse side without Lukaku too.

But would they be worse if they invested that £28m in 2 or 3 players?

So, was I being a "WUM" when I predicted an Everton draw, or was I just "right"?

That's totally different.

Would we be better off with Lovren or the £20m?

The Lovren example suits my point too; we don't know what could have been, we only know what has happened. Everton could have done what you said and been a lot worse. The most important thing in football is getting the ball in the net and having a player that can put the ball in the net certainly helps.

I do take the piss about them standing still but I said the exact same about Lukaku last year. Fair enough, first and foremost I argued that there was no way they'd sign him but I did say it would be spending money to stand still if they did <laugh> I said the same for us with Sahin too, never bothered with Moses or Cissokho because I never thought they'd be good enough.

Only one loan I've argue (and I say argue very loosely) in favour for and Torres in this window because it was little risk and a better option than Balotelli, Borini or Lambert.

Couldn't be much worse than where they are now :bandit:

And there's nothing wrong with taking loans and making them perm, like a try before you buy but you have to also reinvest in other areas as well otherwise as you say, you do just stand still.

Had Everton got Lukaku and Barry but also managed to buy another CM and CB with extra money then they would have been able to keep the same team but progress.

But for a Jagielka screamer they could be 3 points above the relegation zone instead of 4
