I have been trying to think of what type of player we need (if any), so I thought I would have a look at Saints players past and who from the illustrious list would really add something to this team (I'm not even going to mention Tiss, too obvious).

I eventually came up with two. Firstly, Kevin Keegan who is like a rich man's Shane Long. He scored regularly and always looked good playing alongside a tall target man.

The other one would be Terry Paine who would put the ball on to Pelle's head with his fantastic crosses, tuning Pelle into a 30 goal a season player.

Anyone around like those two would do nicely.

Ronnie Ekelund for when Tadic or JWP were having an off day, though this probably should be a separate thread!

The January window is such a false dawn. We all know it, but it just gives us something extra to fantasise about.

He was such a clever player. Never blessed with outrageous pace, so he jinked his way to the byline and crossed on a sixpence. Eventually he became too slow to do that all the time, so he cut inside and crossed early, also on a sixpence. So what, you say..? Well Paine played in the era where the winger had to get to the byline. It was practically part of the rules of the game, so important was it considered. Paine was one of the first wingers to come inside. Eventually his whole game changed and he became a right-sided midfielder.

And he wasn't averse to scoring a few himself either. 183 from 808 appearances for Saints, which a lot of modern out-and-out strikers would bite your hand off to achieve. My favourite Paine goal was one I saw live, a headed equaliser in injury time in a FA Cup 3 round game at Oxford United. A truly inspirational player for both the fans and his team.

Samuel E'too on the verge of joining Sampdoria from Everton. Seems an odd move, I thought he was doing a decent job at the Toffees.

You're right he ended up kind of a Beckham before Beckham was even born.

Watched Ings on Goals on Sunday yesterday which was quoted earlier. Came across as our kind of player. Focused on improving as a footballer and ambitious. He seemed a humble young man but spoke with confidence in his ability.

He has benefitted from playing up top with a target man player (Vokes and Barnes) and if we do manage to sign Ings then I think we need to begin playing two up top more often. Mane & Long have looked more comfortable further forward with Pelle and we get the best out of Graziano with players closer to him

Twitter going hyper over a player called Drmic, I remember him being mentioned last year as being on our radar. Swiss forward playing at Bayer Leverkusen.

Only found it in a Shoot article, which despite being the grounding of my football education 35 years ago, probably isn't the most reliable. Now if it was Match! My son would be swearing blind it was gospel :)

Bryan from Leeds mentioned a couple of times today too.

Byram is a repeat of a rumour from the summer. But apparently we did actually bid. I wonder if he is seriously seen as a suitable replacement for clyne or just a squad addition.

I haven't seen any of him to know. Apparently they are playing him right wing at the moment which suggests he has a good attacking part to his game. But it is the ability to defend very well as well that seems to really set clyne apart from other modern fullbacks

Byram is a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment. Leeds fans vary between some who absolute rave about him, and some who say he's nothing special as a RB. The key point being that those who rave about him compare him to a young Gareth Bale, not in terms of current ability, but moreso in terms of acknowledging that he's a player that will develop even more for moving further up the pitch and being allowed to run at and beat his man more (one of his main qualities). Even those who say he's nothing special as an RB (compared to Prem level RB's) have acknowledged that he has looked a lot lot better in their last two games when he's played in the more advanced role on the right wing.

Based on the above, I'd ask the question regards what position we may actually be looking at him for. May even not be a Clyne replacement, but a more natural winger for the right side. May make sense given the amount of left sided/central options we've already collected by comparison.
