Still a huge lack of local youngsters coming through and challenging for a first team place, highlighted again by our current injurys to strikers. Do any city scouts scout the local hull boys sunday leagues? Why arnt the players bridging the gap and challenging for the first team?
We only started investing in the youth set up last year, we now have a clued up bloke in charge, excellent facilities at Bishop Burton and a complete change in how the lads are recruited. It's a long term plan though, we're obviously not going to get lads into the first team, within a year of setting up our first decent youth academy.
Who's running it lambretta? Yeah great facilities at bishop burton, we have a huge youth league in hull just find it hard to believe that we struggle for local talent, guessing local scouting has had a huge lack of investment from hull city. Any idea on the scouting setup?
We brought Tony Pennock in from Swansea to head up the academy and there've been a lot of changes to scouting at school level and I assume other levels, but these thingsobviously don't resolve themselves overnight.
They nearly ballsed it up this year OLM. They set up their Premier League football competition to see who will represent the city against the others only to miss 60 schools off the original email. (They've been known to use these tournaments to scout in the past). Fortunately they've rectified it.
When you do a major youth overhaul like this it usually takes a generation to start seeing the benefits. It's not like Hull born footballers are going to other clubs. There hasn't been anyone in last 5 years we've missed out on.
Because for years no lads in Hull stand a chance of getting looked at unless they play for the two schools that constantly get kids selected. Don't even have to name them just look at the youth squads down the last 20 years or so and you will see this. then add the lads from the outlying villages and Holder Ness areas along with the out of town lads and that the squads made up year after year. No kids from the estates of which there are 1000s to choose from make good footballers?
I think theres plenty we've missed out on born in the city, due to a poor if non existent local grassroots scouting system

Picking the best young players and having one team is where it all goes wrong, should be picking enough players to have maybe three teams at each age, players with potential to develop. I know that we are still loosing boys to surrounding lower league teams because there is no room to take them here and no time to let them develop its a short trial and see you later.
I had a rant about this a couple of years ago on here and somebody who worked in the scouting side of things happened to be on this site and argued their point about how they do do their job properly. Unfortunately for him, not a single other member backed him up because of the wide spread bad experiences seen by a lot of people on here when it came to scouts and trials and the like. I'm interested to know who the two schools you're talking about are (pm me?) Edit - In fact you messaged me at the time about it!!!
I can understand the club might not have the staff to support more teams, but there are coaches who would be willing to help out it works both ways the club get a coach helping out - the coach gets the experience of working with professional youth coaches
I'm sure i saw a kid in HDm last year. He goes to Wyke or Wilberforce College. He either got in or was having a trial with England Colleges or summat. He isnt in our youth set up, I bet he's matured a bit later than his contemporaries and our lot will have dismissed him at 12.
I didn't mean like that. What I meant is we're not being out scouted in our own city. They signed for City and then left. Presumable due to our academy status.
Cardwells old man thought the coaching at City was ****ing **** and wanted his lad out before they ruined him. I'm hoping this Pennock is going to do some good
In the past the coaching staff have done the best they could with the finances and facilities we had, not knocking them at all its just the fact we have been loosing kids who possibly could have gone further but due to our lack of investment they never had the opportunity. Its still happening, talking to other coaches and parents City just don"t seem as appealing as say Scunny.
I think one of the biggest problem at the club is a lot of areas aren't up to Premier League. The youth set up is one of the areas.
