Every outlet I've seen has quoted £80k for JDF.
How it's structured is irrelevant as it's one massive commitment for one player. He has attitude issues and is injury prone- both well documented facts.
As a Mag this is really good news.

Whilst I do not agree with Ashleys policies on maintaining mid table mediocrity at all costs, I do agree with him that our days of funding insane signings like Defoe are well and truly over.

I suspect that it is one of the reasons that 'Pards' jumped ship. Another January of best player out, no ****er in.

I'm not sure you can look at the Defoe signing as a simple 'this is how much it costs' exercise. They are probably only adding on a max of £30-40k to their wages (as Jozy is going) and are getting a player who will surely do more for them. Sunderland are a tidy team, nothing spectacular, who don't score enough. A Defoe type to poach the odd goal they haven't been getting so far this season is likely to be worth a handful of points to them in a season.

If that means avoiding relegation then its money well spent. If it means 2-3 places in the league then that is a few million pounds extra they get anyway so not costing them anything overall. I can only see this as a bad thing for them if he gets badly injured, but you could say that about any players. *cough* De Jong

Obviously Lineker is wide of the mark as we are indeed looking to strengthen. Just seen that we are tracking North Korean Jong Il-Gwan from the most reliable source of football news (The Jakarta Post). Also just confirmed by Daily Mail today. This is confirmed by Tribal Football, who reported this 3 years ago. Obviously he is highly in demand as we have been tracking him for 3 years now and no-one else has come in for him in the meantime.

We would have to get the regimes approval for him to leave the country but maybe Ashley could negotiate a deal to open a Sports Direct factory there in return.

Could end up with a forward line of Jong De Jong (which must surely be a chant title)

Let's put it this way, I believe if Carver is made manager until the end of the season then Newcastle will not win a match again until the end of the season.

Telegraph coming out claiming the basic being 20k more than Jozy. That's 60k pw. Potential worth of the contract could be 14m which would depend on him helping us stay up every season, win trophies every season and even playing in Europe every season. He won't be paid near 80k pw. Anyone who thinks we will are daft.

He could be paid 80k. He could be paid 60k. He could be paid 40k. He could be paid more, he could be paid less. I'm not really sure why Sunderland fans would be bothered, surely what he is paid is for Ellis Short to worry about? The only thing that concerns Sunderland fans is can he still do it in the PL and can he stay fit. The jury is out on both fronts but it certainly beats doing **** all about their current situ.

Bad wage management has been a thorn in our progression for so long. 80K pw worried me. Reassured somewhat now the chance of him picking up 80k a week are being questioned by the media.

Appreciate my comment is off this topic, but can I say that Boro's point is very valid and very pertinent. The media and most of the public's obsession with how much someone's being paid is an absolute, unmitigated fckng nonsense. There are worse, infinitely worse, people in this world commanding astronomical fortunes at the expense of actual, real-life people. All football does is take a stupid sum of money from Sky and donate it to these simple folk we call "footballers". No-one actually suffers, and if they watched Des Walker driving a lorry or Keith Gillespie begging for coin, without even considering the desperately sad case of Gary Speed, they might just realise how little it matters.

The only thing in a back page should be the words "Defoe" and "Sunderland", everything else is of little consequence.

No way will we absolutely no chance. We actually spent just 4 months back meaning ashley will require player sales not purchases.

Again though, that is being concerned about how your owners operate. With all due respect to the fans, it has **** all to do with them. Ellis Short can pay Shola Ameobi 100k a week if he wants. Once he is the custodian of the club, the finances and all manner of administrative responsibilities rests with him. I've never understood this high and mighty "haha you've overpaid for him" ****e (I'm sure I've probably said it myself at some stage) Or people claiming to know what someone is being paid or what a clubs wage structure is. Or what a club is paying agents. What the club put out there publically doesn't necessarily need to be the case anyway. Sure when the accounts are released the overall bill may look high or low but generally it matters not. Football fans go to matches to support their team and hopefully watch them win. If Jermaine Defoe gets paid 80k a week and helps Sunderland fans see their team win, why would they give a flying **** what Ellis Short has decided the club can afford to pay him under his stewardship. I'm not actively advocating you allow a **** like Risdale etc to run wild and run your club into the ground, but you have to trust whoever the current custodian is to know the maths involved and the expense to the club/owner.

We seem to have been sucked into this obsession with the financing of football. I think the money that comes into football in this country should be managed much more responsibly. I think it should have been fro the very start of Sky pumping money in. Its why football in this country has lost some of its soul. However it hasn't so I get on with watching Newcastle. Its like people moaning the club is turning a profit. I don't mind that personally. I don't mind us only spending 1.8m on Sissoko. I do mind us buying a load of 2nd and 3rd rate players (french or otherwise) because it means I have to watch ****e on a Saturday.

So for me if I was a Sunderland fan I wouldn't give a hoot how much they have paid or are paying him. I would be concerned if he can stay fit and still do the job because that is what will effect their weekend.

Agree with most of what you say but I think reading to much into it. Just fan who's interested in all things Sunderland. From injuries to facilities, from overseas partnerships to the wage bill. I'm not judging, just taking an interest. I was just responding to the good people on this thread who were discussing wages when I dropped in. I think he's a good signing who should, hopefully, put us in a stronger position to stay up. That's all that really matters to me personally

I am convinced that it is all part of Mike's grand plan.
It has all been agreed for the New Coach/Manager to be announced at the end of January along with FOUR new signings handpicked by the new man.

Did I mention I also believe in....

    The Tooth Fairy
    Pixies and Elves

Craig Hope of the daily mail is reporting that Deli Ali will sign this week for an initial fee of 4m rising to 5m depending on appearances etc. Ali is then expected to be loaned back to MK Dons for the remainder of the season.

Would be another good signing if true, encouraging that we're planning for the future.
