Desert Rats? I'll have you know that long ago, in a time since lost in the fog of history, there once occurred a titanic battle between those of the hunt persuasion and the intrepid supporters of the art of sand racing. It was a tipping contest the likes of which had never been seen. Pitted against one another were some of the biggest names in the annuls of racing. With the series tied at one rubber a piece, battle lines were drawn for the deciding show down. With the odds well and truly stacked against them coming into the last day of the third challenge, the brilliant Desert Rats decided to lump almost all their selections on a horse called Desperate Dan, an animal from memory, chosen by the genius NassauBoard. The hunt players were an utter rabble when it came to the crunch. They sprayed their selections around like a farmer feeding chooks, they had no hope. The showdown came on 1 March 2010 at wonderful Wolverhampton, one of the most beautiful race courses God has ever had the grace to design. Going to the start stalls the aging warrior Desperate Dan, ridden by Neil Callan, one of the finest horsemen ever to throw a leg across a saddle, was largely despised in the betting ring. There was 8-1 everywhere. The punters, most of them idiots, threw great wads at Ingleby Star which saw him start at 8-13. The Rats needed Dan to win if they were to put those grubby hunt supports firmly back where they belonged...among their erstwhile friends, the pig farmers. Needless to say, the aging Desperate Dan came with a wet sail to win as he liked. Never again will the hunt lads and lasses be able to point a derisive, muddy digit at the sand supporters, for they have been tested in the heat of battle and not been found wanting, which is more than can be said for those who follow the plodders that only just pass for racehorses.
This is the issue with history cyc, it gets rewritten and morphed. Stick? Hmm... I remember the convo (and my betting slip!) Today... I'm Spartacus... Well I'm with Brave Spartacus in the 2nd at Muss.
Cyc's right - 1.3.2010 is one of the most resonant dates in (Not)606 history, and that AW team carried an intellectual firepower to make Turing and Hawking look like Beavis and Butthead. Desperate Dan was greatly loved on the forum, to the extent that GALAXY HIMSELF subsequently wrote an elegiac piece about him that Tennyson would have been proud of. Golden days, golden days.
Oh what wonderful days they were Rainer. I don't think I saw Galaxy's prose, but I'm sure he did justice to both that magic day and Desperate Dan. I wonder if it's at all possible to track down the piece? The memory of the chat that flew back and forth over those three, glorious weeks still fills me with warmth. There was much wit.
Cyc , you last post sounded like an excerpt from a Lord of the Rings script ... but yes they were great times ... The memory of the chat that flew back and forth over those three, glorious weeks still fills me with warmth. There was much wit in the shire ... but mordor was stirring ...

Nice shout out to one of the forums ever favs Desperate Dan Cyc Speaking of which I wonder how old boy Galaxy is getting on these days, havnt seen him on the forum for a couple of years now
Cyc, what a complete load of utter bollox.............. Hardly remember a thing about this insignificant event, but I do believe the NH guys, on the last day, were left with an umpteen-runner Class-Christknowswhat hurdle in a remote place in Ireland which I had never heard of before. A really valiant attempt was made to find the winner in a race which even the horses did not know who would win. The Flat people were left with a standard field on the sandpit, and made sure of success by having NassauBoard despatch 'The Needle' up to Wolverhampton to ensure DD did his dirty work. The whole thing was an outrageous fix!
ste, good luck with the Dundalk 2, I would not touch Dundalk at all, being Irish I know what a complete and utter dodgey track it is and unless a tip comes from Bandit Country I wouldn't touch any Dundalk race!!!
Haha I hear ye Balicks normally wouldn't touch 'El Paso' but the source gave me a nice winner there last week and a couple before that so just going on his word.i once dated a girl in college from dundalk and found out her oul lad was 'involved' when I saw him on a spotlight documentary!lovely lass though
LOL. My Scottish friend loves Dundalk racing as he's always guaranteed an outside winner. Ste, correct me if I am wrong but did you once say you lived or live in Belfast??????? I may have a wee dabble on the 2 tonight just for a laugh, is your source Irish by any chance? oh and Spotlight-great show reports as much keek as the Sunday World LOL.
Swanny. There's a winner in every race, it's just that the NH guys were all over the shop. Headless chooks springs to mind. The Sand Warriors were well deployed for the battle. While the plodder brigade couldn't get their act together, the valiant sand soldiers were putting their heads together in an effort to get a result. Once Nass had put up good reason for the support of Desperate Dan, we, the Sultans of the Sand, sacrificed our own selections for the betterment of the cause. I'm still filled with awe as I recall the members offering to follow the selection of Nass. One by one, they lined up cast their vote for the aged warrior. Yes, as Rainer said. "1.3.2010 is one of the most resonant dates in (Not)606 history."
