Rumour mill going mad that Warnock has been given permission to speak to another Championship club, seems to be a captains curse. His contract is up at the end of the season and early doors it seemed plane to see that Cellino wanted him out so I can see this one happening this week.
Just read the article & was about to post it myself. Question to all - should he stay or should he go? http://footballleagueworld.co.uk/leeds-united-receive-enquiry-from-championship-club-for-defender/? SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP Leeds United receive enquiry from Championship club for defender BY SAM ROURKE ⋅ JANUARY 11, 2015 ⋅ POST A COMMENT FILED UNDER LEEDS, WARNOCK Leeds United have received an enquiry for defender Stephen Warnock from an unnamed Championship club, according to YEP journalist Phil Hay. please log in to view this image Warnock is a target for an unnamed Championship club The 33-year-old full-back’s contract runs out at Elland Road at the end of the season, thus meaning the club could be ready to cash in on the experienced defender. Warnock joined Leeds United in 2013 and has gone on to make over 55 appearances for the Yorkshire club, also becoming the club captain this season. The left-back has a wealth of experience playing in the Football League, having had spells at Bradford City, Coventry City,Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers. The 33-year-old defender started his career at Liverpool and he went on to make over 40 appearances for the Merseyside club in a spell which lasted five years. He then joined Blackburn Rovers in 2007 and there he went on to accumulate 88 appearances for the club, scoring five goals. Meanwhile, the Elland Road outfit are currently eyeing a deal for former Manchester United winger Febian Brandy, as reported on FLW. The 25-year-old winger was released by Rotherham United on Thursday, and has spent two months out on-loan at Sky Bet League One side Crewe Alexandra this season. According to FLW sources, Redfearn is contemplating taking a punt on the midfielder who spent his whole youth career atPremier League giants Manchester United. Leeds United have also been linked with a move for former Whites legend Luciano Becchio and Redfearn could make a move for him this transfer window, as reported on FLW. The Leeds United manager has also not ruled out a move for former striker Jermaine Beckford. Leeds United currently sit in 21st position in the Sky Bet Championship, having accrued 25 points from 25 league games.
I clearly need sleep. I read your post when you put it up ristac and thought, why the hell is he banging on about Colin finding another club? Then when WJ posted the article it clicked It says we look set to "cash-in" on him, I can't imagine we'd get much, and in our current situation we can't afford to bring in a high level replacement. I'd say keep him until summer but give Taylor more game time
I did read on the news earlier that Cellino has said new faces will be fast and furious upon his return so we might see some happenings tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if we get Redfearn loan targets as in Becchio or Cellino ones as in from Italy. Warnock will be out of contract in the summer, on one hand we have Taylor and Berardi who can fill the position and I would imagine Warnock is on a pretty good wage, on the other he has been stand out this season. I think it depends on who wants him, if it is someone who might be fighting to avoid relegation lets say no.
I said earlier I want to try and remain positive, I just Wiki'd Febian Brandy and wished I hadn't - Becchio and Beckford as another option, being positive it could be worse, Heskey and Gudjohnsen
If we wernt in a relegation battle I'd say sell, But we might need his experience, As for beccio and beckford,no way.
With Hunt gone, Morisson and Warnock are reportedly the two highest earners remaining on supposedly 20k each per week. Cellino doesnt rate any player as being worth that so Id imagine, given half a chance, he probably will go. He certainly wont be offered an extension on his present salary
It occurs to me that one thing we are very short of is leaders. And Warnock is a leader. I wonder if Cellnio will recognise this & retain Warnock.
We are being asset stripped by a guy who said he wanted to build the club not sell it bit by bIt for cash. If Bates was doing this, most of you would be going nuts. It is just an excercise in reducing cost, sad but true, we won't get promoted on the cheap.
Warnock has played some pretty good games this season, some bad and some mediocre, but, imo he hasn't been our outstanding player. He's now 33yrs old, the pace of the Championship has caught up with him, opposing players have been getting round and behind him all season, despite him preventing some goals. He lapses concentration from time to time and is now at the stage where he's even more injury prone. Odds are that Warnock wouldn't be first choice next season any way. High earner or not, as we're supposedly building for next season (can someone let Redfearn know) now would be a good time to blood Charlie Taylor and bed him in for next season. I doubt Austin or Murphy will be first choices next season either, and Morison the wandering nomad will probably just be hanging around canteen if not sold. Austin may go sooner than we think as he may see a move as a better opportunity for regular football. Unless Sharp bucks up, which I can't see, then I think it won't be long before he leaves too, either on loan, sold or by mutual agreement.
Rewind: the hapless head coach last week was saying we need to add to the squad, citing the need to have more experience in the squad. Today Cellino and Salerno restart their efforts to get rid of Warnock. Anyone else spot it?
Rumours of Leeds United's influential defender and Captain having a medical at Derby are coming through, there is a high probability that Leeds United's Captain and left back Stephen Warnock is to undergo a medical examination at Moor Farm today. Warnock has been out with an ankle injury recently but it is not thought this would jepodise any transfer if the rumours are true. At 33 years of age, it would be a big gamble for the Rams and also a drain on resources if Warnock gets the £40,000 per week he commands at the moment. Leeds are said to be letting Warnock go to lighten the wage bill at Elland Road. http://www.derbycounty-mad.co.uk/
£40k a week. If the rest of that report is accurate then it's not Derby he is going to. About this ankle injury, does it exist, or was it just a way of him not playing and risking injury.
I didn't believe the £40k a week part for a second but Derby would make sense as they also say Warnock's two caps were whilst McClaren was in charge. http://boards.footymad.net/forum.php?tno=181&fid=16&sty=2&act=1&mid=2110358512 few interesting comments on there as well
We will need a lot of "championship experience " in the side over the next 3 months. It will be a hard slog and our management team will hopefully be putting together an attempt to get some instead of apparently reducing it ! As ever though the fans are always the last to know anything and we will have to wait and see what turns up.
If he did not already play for us and we heard that he was set to join on a free transfer (forgetting the crazy quote of £40k a week) I think we would all be saying it is just the experience we need with such a young squad. He is out of contract anyway in the summer so I am swaying towards the thought that we are better off with him, an injury to Taylor and then what, Berardi has to switch to LB Byram back at RB and we lose the new formation of 4-2-3-1 that some are saying is the way forward for us.
Ristac. That was my point re experience. If its down to reducing the wage bill then we are really in trouble as who would we ever get of experience and ability to join the club.
A big step forward was made in terms of wage reducing by Hunt agreeing to leave, that's the kind of transaction that needs to happen. Championship experienced players who still have something to offer will be of use in a relegation scrap. At the minute I can only think of Warnock and Sharp as falling into that category. And Sharp has a lot to prove.
Warnock has been our most consistent player this season by a fair distance. Getting rid of him now, would be a mistake in my opinion.
