Excellent debate on here guys. I have been tied up with work this week so have only been able to pop in and out of here on the phone now and again. I did shudder when I saw this and the Ched Evans thread as it could be a moderator's nightmare (and indeed is on other team sites) but I should have known better really. I love this board I can't add much else so just to say that whilst I don't necessarily feel Je suis Charlie for the same reasons as set out by Cologne I do, of course, feel for the victims and their families.
Not really relevant but after a bit after Sep 11 attacks I had to fly out of L Town Airport. There was a guy wearing a shirt that said "Don't freak, I'm a Sikh" People mustn't lose their humour over such a terrible incident. I hope that not all Muslims get tainted again because of this.
The old testament is not Christian, it is basically the Jewish Tanakh. The Christians have appropriated it as background for the Jewish roots of Jesus, after all He was not a Christian. And remember the Catholic and Protestant branches of Christianity have taken different amounts of the Tanakh for their own use.
What an interesting point - of course you are absolutely correct and if I think about it I knew there was a massive overlap here between Christianity and Judaism but I had never really thought about the old testament as not being Christian. It is the "nasty" part of the bible with an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, the parts that bigoted people like to quote when they try to justify homophobia and the like as opposed to the teachings of Jesus who preached non violence and turning the other cheek.
It's getting worse, hostages taken in a Jewish supermarket - though to be the same gunman who shot a policewomen yesterday
"What could be more rational than believing in a god capable of creating an unfathomably huge universe whose self-esteem is dependent on constant praise from a ...band of jumped-up, self-important savanna apes on one small planet in that universe? Oh, and did I mention that the universe was made specifically for the jumped-up savanna apes, as their temporary abode, until such time that the apes move on to eternity in a pan-dimensional existence, where they offer non-stop praise to the emotionally needy creator, or alternatively to a pan-dimensional existence where they are tortured by imps and demons?" WildwoodClaire1. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ What she said! Check her out on You Tube. Quite superb.
As I watch the two sieges taking place I am struck by the show of despair by so many ordinary French citizens about what is taking place in their up to now decent democratic society. While the police do their jobs however there is a political storm blowing up. On Sunday there is to be a huge display of solidarity with all the political parties joining together in a march through Paris. The National Front have not been invited as it is thought that some of their statements are fanning the flames against the immigrant population. Maybe you would or wouldn't be surprised to find that these comments can be heard in the UK from a politician seeking to gain seats in Parliament. While said politician says he does not wish to be associated with the NF, he frequently joins with that party in the EU. It is becoming more difficult to spot the difference between them.
The two sieges are over, but there are so many questions to be answered now. The police are still looking for one woman suspect who was involved with the shooting of the trainee policewoman. Just how they slipped through the net of the security forces seems unknown, when they were known to the US and UK authorities. I believe that there will be quite a large fallout from these events over the coming days and weeks.
It will be similar to the Lee Rigby murder OFH. His murderers were will known to the security services, but they could not monitor their activities 24x7, so they slipped through the net as well. As always, it will come down to resources!
Anybody who thinks their imaginary god is far more important than living people who dont want to believe is a nutter in my book.
I actually agree with you. Could you please do me a favour and stop that thing from leaping around. It is doing my eyes in.
I see plenty of them as well as their human counter parts. Yes, I do like them, but yours is distracting. If some French players were as quick they would be world beaters.
what are you talking about frenchie...? I have just had half a bottle of merlot.... and I still cant see what you mean.... do I need to drink more?
Whilst I realize that anything less than grief stricken support could be seen as disrespectful or out of place here, and whilst there can be no justification for murder whatsoever - I feel the need to change the orientation of this debate a little. I do not feel comfortable with idealizing a magazine whose staff is all white and whose cartoons often reflect a virulent xenophobia - they claim to attack all people yet their cartoons are intentionally anti Islamic and also Racist. If you doubt this then look at some of them and you will quickly realize that the same material would be banned in the UK or in Germany, and I do not feel that racist material should be allowed to hide under the banner of 'free speech' - or do we want to go back to the type of satire released by the magazine 'Punch' at the end of the 19th Century. Their material has had the aim of insulting their largest (but most marginalized) minority ethnic group for many years. T The cartoons were meant to inflame and to throw out a bait which was unfortunately taken in the most horrible way.
What has happened in France these last 3 days , will happen in the UK make no mistake , and very probably in Germany as well. Where Muslim populations are centred in Norway Sweden and Denmark Violent crime rates have gone through the roof . There are a small amount of decent Muslims who have spoken out against extremist atrocities! But the majority have stayed silent (although probably scared of reprisal from Sharia police). If the "moderate" muslim world spoke out against the extremists in large numbers maybe the radicals may be reigned in , however when the majority stay silent ,the radical minority will hold sway as we are seeing now . If things carry on as they are I can see civil war in european countries in the next decade! As people dont trust their leaders and take matters into their own hands ! I really worry what sort of world my grandson is going to be a part of , the really sad thing is I do not envy him one bit!
