Sunderland have way overpaid (£14m reports suggest) for a 32 year old who turns 33 in october. Yes i wanted Defoe but not at the price that Sunderland have had to fork out. Crazy wonga by a desperate club.

SB will have many options for sure.

They haven't paid anything for him, they've just swapped him for Altidore, the £14m is £80k a week wage for the 3 1/2 years of his deal.

80k is just the press dividing the contract value down into a weekly figure. The Telegraph are claiming his basic will be 20k more a week than Altidore was on(which should be aroud 60k) The rest are add ons such as qualification to Europe, goal targets and winning trophies(two of those aren't likely in the next three year, never know but I doubt it). The deal just gets better by the hour if the Media are to be believed. I don't know what to believe, so long as we stay up I'm happy.

The MLS publish the players earning and last year Defoe was paid £100k a week, I can't see him throwing away £40k a week to join you, so common sense suggests that even if he was desperate to get back to the UK, it's still more likely to be £80k than £60k.

They do publish them yes but he didn't earn that mate. He earned $ 6,000,000.00 for the year. That works out at around £76k PW.

Also, with there being no money involved in the transfer, he may have secured a good signing on fee to compensate for the wage drop. That's something which is very possible but we'll never know.
