I don’t want Kane or any other player of ours anywhere near the senior England squad. The only thing England players seem capable of these days is hurting themselves.
Hodgson implying the door is open for Kane, Berahino and Austin - yet forgot about Danny Ings, which sounds about right for the average England coach.
Roy Hodgson says "Kane has come on in leaps and bounds this season". Well spotted Roy. Good to see you are earning your salary.
It's scary how bad he is at spotting talent. The amount of time it took for Clyne to get called up(and then to actually start him ahead of Chambers and Stones) is ridiculous, not to mention the trust he put in Cleverley and continues to put in Smalling. He just wets his finger, puts it in the air and then follows the prevailing wind in the media. It's a continuing embarrassment that the FA stood by the man who brought us 1 point at the World Cup.
Cleverley and Smalling got picked due to the fact they played for Man Utd - which is why Cleverley is suddenly not good enough for England as soon as he was loaned to Villa, yet he apparently was the week before.
In a serious response, I also think that for right now it's best for Harry to stay with the U-21s - although in some ways, a call up to the senior squad is something he deserves, especially when you consider some of the players that have been called up in recent months. The U-21's are a good bunch of players; Kane, Berahino, Hughes, Redmond, Carroll, Pritchard, Butland, Ings and others all have potential to become good/ great players and I think it'll only benefit them and our country if all play together for as long as possible with a view to them possibly becoming a main part of the seniors come 2016 or 2018.
He will get a chance soon because Hodgson will want a look at him, but Rooney, Welbeck, Sturridge (when fit) and Sterling are the forward players I would expect him to stick with for the foreseeable future. Hodgson tends to persist with the players he has chosen. Kane would most likely play in a centre forward role - which would mean displacing Welbeck presently or Sturridge (when fit). As Welbeck has been in good goalscoring form, that seems unlikely. Hodgson puts a lot of store by experience and familiarity between players, so Kane might get no more than half an hour or so in a friendly this season. His progress would be better served by playing regularly in the u-21s. England's history is littered with tales of promising players (like Joachim) who were picked on the back of a short run of good form at club level, only to fail to impress at international level and then get discarded forever.
Right now Kane is one the most effective strikers in the PL therefore by definition he is good enough for England. Whether that should translate into Kane being picked to lead the England line is a different question and one to which the answer is no not yet. ATM he would probably be in and out of the team and would not have the support of team mates who know him this would not help his game at all. Lennon, for example, was ill used by England in my view, plonked on the wing but received little ball and therefore struggled to make an impact, as with so many players we never saw the 'real Lennon' in an England shirt. Another season for Kane would be best for him and best for England IMO.
I'm with you, Spurf. Lennon was starved of any kind of service (there were rumours of a divided squad being the reason) and went down the pecking order as a result. But even more significantly, look at the effect of England selection on Townsend, Rose and Walker. They all thought they were invincible, believing their own hype, and their form went down the pan! I'd hate to see that happen to the very promising Harry Kane. It's only now that the three of them have started to retrieve their reputations so far as Im concerned. One thing about Kane is that he seems to be injury-proof. I fear an appearance in an England shirt right now might change that! But I do believe he has serious potential. Just not yet, please Roy!
The young man is showing all the talents of a prospective long term winner But He is a young man and like all young players in their first big time season will have a period where performance drops considerably When he comes out of the poor performance spell we will see just how solid his future will be so lets give him as much downtime as is available and forget England selection (for now)
I think he is - better than the alternatives - Wellbeck, Sturridge and Rooney. These guys just don't have what it takes and if Crouch and Defoe were good enough for International football, then Kane certainly is..
Definitely better than Welbeck, he's developed as such a one dimensional player which typifies the problems with how English sides used to coach youngsters. Either the game suits him or he's useless. That said, whilst Kane might be a much better overall player, Welbeck does have a good international record. Kane's got a way to go before he's better than Rooney or Sturridge. Sturridge is like Welbeck, except he's been trained properly so he has a first touch, knows how to find space in the box and is a very consistent finisher. So basically he's nothing like Welbeck Rooney is a weird one, no one seems to know where to play him to get consistent performances out of him. I've seen him have excellent games as a lone striker, behind the striker, out wide and in central midfield but it's been years since he's put in a consistent level of performance across a season. I'd rather Kane was left out of the England sideshow and allowed to just concentrate on building his career at club level but I don't think there's a chance of that happening now. I just hope he sticks his fingers in his ears when Hodgson's giving him instructions.
I reiterate my desire for Kane to stay with the England U21s until the end of their Euro cycle this summer (and for that side to be left alone and not have the youngsters in the Senior side automatically drop down and gain places) and then move into the Senior setup if its still appropriate for him to do so. I think that is best for everyone involved.
I don't see how Kane compares to Welbeck. Welbeck's role for England has often been the run the channels - to occupy defenders and hold up the ball or to hit teams on the break with pace. When he has played more centrally, England have used a more counterattacking game - and this is when he has had more success in front of goal. His pace is his best asset. His performances for England have been good so I can't see why Hodgson would discard him, even in favour of a player having a purple patch for his club. Kane is a different type of player and would involve a change in tactics if selected.
I think Welbeck is the more complete player - at the moment! However, nobody can deny that Kane is the in form striker of the Premiership right now. How he develops from here, we will have to wait and see. To be honest, he has already surprised me greatly with more talent and intelligence - not to mention coolness, than I would have credited him with.
We will have to see how he does in the longer term. But I found myself thinking he was going to score alone against three defenders against Palace, and he nearly did. The transformation from a year or so ago, when I thought he looked like a useful player, but no great goal threat, is striking.
