The clearout hasn`t finished yet! Gus` first priority was to stop the rot & it looks as if he`s on the way to doing that. It was never going to be easy. Ellis was/is naturally wary given the previous debacles. We`re on the right track and the next two windows will give a better indication of where we`re going. Overall, steady progress, and, given the shambles over the last few seasons, probably as much as we can reasonably hope for.
MoN's win % is skewed by the face we had a 10 game run where where a goal kick was considered a half chance such was our luck and momentum also as has been stated Gust has inherited the worst SAFC team any of those managers had to work with excluding Mick of course. I honestly can't believe there are people even on the fence but that is due to my own perception that Gus is our 1st manager since Reidy who knows how to get his team to play football. Last year he said something along the lines of if we go down we'll go down passing the ball and I thought yeah I'm patient enough to give a man like poyet time to build the club where as I was not as patient for Brucey and Keane to squander millions to stand still.
On board. Just wish he'd have the financial backing bruce n keane got as he wipes the floor with them coaching wise. If he had Everton or Spurs squad to work with theyd be comfortably top 4 imo.
Like all managers, he will be judged on the results from a team that HE builds. Personally, I have a confidence within me that during this transfer window and the following Summer window, he will get his team. Just get an out-and-out scorer within the next three weeks and I think we'll finish in the top half !!
Agreed, thought I'd post it as it was relevant but it is only half a painting. I mean, Bruce, Keane and to a lesser extent MoN were bank rolled and given what they wanted. The article doesn't even mention that.
An interesting read that. Shocking how few long term managers we've had. 2 seasons tops with Short. Our best success came with our longest serving manager. Is that because he did well he stayed on or because he stayed on he did well? Considering he got us relegated would a manager survive relegation these days?
I think Gus would have simply because we were expected to be relegated when he arrived. Might even survive if it happened this season. Might be wrong but it seems like Short is taking a steadier approach now.
On the bus ,no need to change the driver but some passengers need to be asked to get off ,so we can pick up new ones
He's my favourite Sunderland boss in my lifetime as a fan (1988-present) He is a genuine coach in that he makes people better players. contrast the player he's turned Catts into at 26 with the player he was under Bruce. It's very very difficult to improve a player at that stage of his career. Stevie Bruce bought him yes but Gus has made him into the top class DM he now is. SB the spender, GP the coach. Also he has that arrogance/swagger to leave you in no doubt who's in charge. He still manages to come across really well as a bloke and I just find myself nodding in agreement when I hear him speak (contrast with Bruce "we had 7 injuries today and that made a big difference. But I'm not making excuses."!!! Yes you are, Steve. You literally are.) As u can gather I'm a big fan and I am certain he is the man to whom we should be giving time at the club. There are dissenters though and I pray their voices don't get too loud.
There's a few examples of his man management skills. Johnson (January 2014/Walcott's injury) Getting Fletcher "angry" Getting the Hulk (Catts) to control his anger and channel it (Avengers Assemble style) He also seems to have got a level out of Larsson I genuinely didnt think existed. Could evem say the same about Oshea who I have been a long time critic of but has been great recently. He also got the Mannone/Pantilimon situation spot on.
Forgot about those two. Especially Larsson. Massive improvement. Definitely overlooked management skills there mind. Has to be.
Big fan of Gus, he's not totally proven but there has to be an element of faith in supporting a team, especially ours! If the question was who could do better with what we've got or who would I prefer then no one comes to mind at all. Hope and optimism for the future with solid performances is the best we can hope for just now imo and for me he's delivering.Love his work and get genuinely excited for matches, despite the sometimes staid performances, because we have a decent chance of a result and players fulfilling all of their potential. As I say what more can you ask for?
Was talking to my lad about this very thing earlier today. When you look at the list of candidates for the mags job, they`re a pretty sorry lot. There`s only McLaren worth a second thought really. Nobody out there I would think as being a big step up from Gus.
I am worried he might leave us if he isn't backed and seems to spend a good bit of time pointing out the shortcomings of his squad in a fairly nice way. Of course if Gus is as good as I think he is he will prove it and move on but just hope we give him the chance and tools to prove how good he is. Love your posts by the way Grandpops, Am too busy to post myself much but have a scan as and when I can, top banter from you and many others mate cheers
That`s nice, thank you. I`ll say me piece. Plenty will agree, plenty won`t. That`s what makes it interesting. Post what you can when you can mate. The more who contribute the better it gets. And so do the fights
