Short article about where some of our players from 1997-8 season are now. Mentions the mystery about Dodds sacking, but with no revelation (sadly) .http://www.shoot.co.uk/category/features/southampton-where-are-they-now/
Added now. Picky, picky. I have been up slaving over a hot keyboard since 3.00...where have you lot been. In your pits, no doubt.
Some of those 90's relegation fights were brilliant. So many times we looked down & out only to string a bunch of results together & condemn someone else to the drop. We were a little like the angels of death, play us in April, lose & you were down. There's some players who didn't make a fortune from the game, but the footy stories are worth so much more.
Up to a point. Never ultimately enjoyed the relegation fights. There were fun moments, but I always dreamed of the days when Saints punched over their weight, and were at the other end of the table. Being successful, or getting damn near to it, is far more enjoyable than avoiding failure.
Yes, I remember every season going straight to view the April fixtures as our old mantra was "win three games in April and we'll stay up"... Even pushing that in 98/99 to "win three games in May" But no matter how exciting they were, please leave them back in my memory bank, never to surface in reality again.
I used to dream of being a midtable team who never worried about relegation. Of course, we had many seasons where we weren't in danger, but we always tended to flirt with trouble at some point.
Such a shame that you never saw the light until later, Fran. We had some brilliant seasons under Lawrie in the 80's. A couple of Chris Nicholl's seasons weren't too shabby either. Only thing was, back then you knew it would end sooner rather than later. This time round it has all the makings of some longevity.
Up to a point. Never ultimately enjoyed the relegation fights _______________- Indeed, looking back now. At the time I wasn't hoping we'd lose the first 9 fixtures to make it exciting! Some of our escapes were incredible.
I remember the time we stayed up on goal difference with a 0-0 against Wimbledon. If that happened today, this forum would be awash with urine.
Was that the year that Ballie had City keeping the ball in the corner against Liverpool, thinking they had done enough? Funny as that.
95/96. Yeah, City went down. Brilliant day, in the end. Always more exciting then, with the people in the crowd with radios, jumpers for goalposts, isn't it? Interesting fact: that was the first time in my life that I ever used the C word. Possibly in conjunction with "ginger."
Nice article. It was a good season. I was quite happy with David Hirst signing that season. Was a great player. Scored against us in my first ever game at The Dell! Shame about his injuries. Was never keen on Jones bringing Paul Jones in though. I always though Maik Taylor was a better keeper.
36 points - is safe, didn't you hear the fans on Thursday? .... .... "And now you're going to believe us..."
