t**t!!! That was liquid football.
I was behind the goal in the South Stand when he scored that, one of my all time favourite City goals
Francis pestered a laydee my mate was well on with and after been politely told to go away. Gave it the big Dont you know who i am. My mate should possibly have said dont you know who iam?? An ex light heavyweight boxer....
I sadly missed that one. Still try to convince me sen I was there, but I'm just kidding myself. Bunno had a chin like desperate dan. Must have been some shot.
Billy Bly - GK...most fearless keeper I've ever seen Andy "Jock" Davidson - RB...hard as nails CAPTAIN & enforcer Paul Feasey - CH/CB,(sweeper, central defender)...small fella, but unbeatable in the air Viggo Jensen - CB (or CM)...pure class, tough but a gentleman...one of first foreigners to play in England Emlyn Hughes - LB....in the twilight of his career, but as an icon with Liverpool could only be a cult hero at City Doug "Nobby" Clark - RM (wing forward)...he was a whippet down the right, brilliant crosses from the byline Ken Knighton - CM.....what every team needs (then & now)...team leader (Ashbee like) Ken Houghton - CM.....the playmaker of the fantastic 60's succesful City team...overshadowed by Chilton & Wagstaff, but he made the team tick Ian Butler - LM (wing forward)......he could beat anybody down the left, also brilliant goalscorer & accurate crosser of the ball. Chris Chilton - striker...fearless, tireless worker, goalscorer supreme (particularly with his head...hard to find anyone better - even now). ..local hero. Ken Wagstaff - striker, mercurial, could beat anyone, a game-winner supreme, consummate goal poacher ( Denis Law, Jimmy Greaves type). Named all my dogs & cats after him. My son's very grateful we had pets. subs: Chris Simpkin - tough as nails too, hard working midfielder. Bill Bradbury.... showman inside forward/striker, but he could score goals from anywhere. Brian Bulless...cultured midfield playmaker...I'm pretty sure he invented the long throw-in...wonderful to watch him control midfield. Billy Bremner - never saw him play for City - but watched him with Leeds in his heyday. Don't need to say anymore - brilliant all round. Stu Elliot.....a pleasure to watch...best of his era I would say Ian McKechnie - GK...character (earnt as much from selling oranges as he did playing). Excellent keeper & a hero in his time
Astonished you have omitted Raich Carter who was a true cult icon and Neil Franklin who was the best centre half I have seen play for Hull City.
I think I maybe just a few years younger than your good self Mr. B_M_B. I did see them both play for City a few times, but was only about 7 years old at the time, so I couldn't really justify putting either in my list...although obviously they were major cult heros - as were Stan Mortenson, Wilf Mannion & a few others of that era who were at the end of their careers. My gran was a friend of Horatio's wife...never got to meet him personally...although many years later did get to meet one of his proteges - one Ken Wagstaff ! I bought 5 signed copies of his biography when I used to visit his bar in Hessle on my trips back home.
Cornelius Franklin, check Chris Eltons book, gave my mother a lift in his car when she was pregnant with myself in 1953.Grew up with the names of Carter,Franklin,Ken Harrison,Vigo Jensen,Don Revie ,Billy Bly On another point when I was back recently went round the estate they built on Boothferry Park.It was sad really, but I was angry about the names Jensen way fair enough but where was Carter,Wagstaff way,Chjilton Close,Grimes Grove.
Billy Bly - GK...agreed TC....most fearless keeper I've ever seen also...played from late 30's into early 60's. Andy "Jock" Davidson - RB...hard as nails CAPTAIN & enforcer...so tough he could play on a broken leg...over 600 games for City Pete Skipper -CH...ruthless....took no prisoners...another hard man. Viggo Jensen - LB/FW...could play anywhere....also hard as nails.....one of first foreigners to play in England... Bill Harris...outstanding MF....ruthless in the tackle. Neil Franklin...CM...pure class although past his best when he played for us. Ian Ashbee - CM.....what every team needs (then & now)...team leader....struck fear in the hearts of the opposition. Ken Houghton - CM.....the playmaker of the fantastic 60's succesful City team...overshadowed by Chilton & Wagstaff, but he made the team tick Doug "Nobby" Clark - RW...strong as an ox... brilliant crosser Ian Butler - LW ......he could beat anybody down the left, also brilliant goalscorer & accurate crosser of the ball. Chris Chilton - striker...fearless, tireless worker, goalscorer supreme...brilliant in the air....local hero. Ken Wagstaff - striker, mercurial, could beat anyone, a game-winner supreme, consummate goal poacher Raich Carter..FW...a true legend...best City player ever....dominated the play...a man among boys. Billy Whitehurst...striker...throwback to another era...hard man on the field and unforgettable character Stu Elliot.LW/FW....a pleasure to watch...brilliant goal scorer and amazing in the air.
I really don't think I could improve on that Canada. Essentially a mix of the Carter promotion team of 48/49 and the Waggy promotion team of 65/66. These were truly great teams. Today we have a large good(on paper) squad but cannot find a reasonable team from within it.
