    Newcastle's Jonas Gutierrez to return after overcoming cancer

    Midfielder Jonas Gutierrez will make his comeback for Newcastle in an Under-21s game against West Ham on Monday.

    The 31-year-old returned to the club last month and has been training after overcoming testicular cancer.

    Gutierrez had an operation in his native Argentina to remove his left testicle in September after the discovery of a tumour, before undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

    His last first-team game was in April, during a brief loan spell at Norwich.

    He will feature as an over-age player for the Magpies in the U21 Cup fixture against the Hammers at Whitley Park, which kicks off at 13:00 GMT.

    His last appearance for United came in the same competition, just under a year ago, when they beat Leicester City 2-1 at the same venue.

    Gutierrez, a Newcastle fans' favourite after he played a starring role in helping the club win the Championship in his second season in the north-east, has scored 10 goals in 177 league appearances for the Magpies since joining the club in 2008.

    Gael Bigirimana fired Newcastle in front in the 14th minute
    after Callum Roberts laid the ball out for Bigirimana to arrive on the overlap and blast it home.

    Surely Roberts is worth a go with our under performing wingers? Everytime I read a report his name is in the action.

    Newcastle U21s 4 West Ham U21s 1

    Peter Beardsley's side return to competitive action this afternoon, when they host West Ham in an U21 Premier League Cup tie at Whitley Park.

    Gael Bigirimana fired Newcastle in front in the 14th minute after Callum Roberts laid the ball out for Bigirimana to arrive on the overlap and blast it home.

    The lead was extended six minutes after the break when Jonas Gutierrez's forward pass from the halfway line was helped on by Liam Smith to Adam Campbell who darts into the box and finishes well.

    Substitute Matthias Fanimo pulled the ball back from the left side of the box for Paul McCallum to head home for the visitors in the 61st minute to halve the deficit.

    It was 3-1 in the 76th minute when Bigirimana found Roberts on the right flank and he set off and then cut infield, exchanging passes with Tom Heardman on the edge of the box before slipping the return ball home.

    Three minutes later Josh Pask almost scored for the Hammers but his dipping shot from distance grazed Freddie Woodman's crossbar.


    But in the 89th minute Liam Gibson received the ball in space on the left hand side of the area and curled home a right footer to seal the victory.

    Dan Ward replaced Gutierrez in the final minute with Jonas receiving a big round of applause for his first competitive action since his battle against testicular cancer.

    Welcome back Jonas. See young Roberts is again amongst the goals, his tally so far this season is excellent especially when you take into consideration he's a winger.

    From what I can see he has 13 goals so far this season (including friendly matches). Unsure on assists too, but he always tends to be involved.

    Not bad at all for a winger, I dont recall Arma or Campbell knocking in double digits before Xmas and they are strikers.
