Why didn't the OP ask them instead of asking here?

Sunderland is a one club city with a proud heritage/tradition of winning things in football. They also have a stadium capable of holding 40,000. If we were a one club city with their tradition and had our own ground with a 40,000 capacity we would be almost identical. Only Hull is a bigger city then Sunderland so you could say we could actually be bigger then them. Pointless question really.
And the club are not taking me to Sunderland. I'm making my own way there, with 50 odd other drink sodden like minded blokes. We wouldn't have it any other way.

Not exactly a great history of winning things whilst we have been going to football. I have been in Roker Park with 13,000 there. Mind you they still made hell of a noise. A shame no one in Hull came forward to build a large stadium like they did in Sunderland, though I am sad to say I think there is very little chance of us filling a 40,000 stadium regularly.
The fact they have a larger stadium doesn't account for them taking a lot more away with further distances to travel either.

Derby, of the Championship, the week before Xmas had over 30,000 for a league cup quarter final followed up by 28,000 on Saturday for an early kick-off, both games live on TV. Like Sunderland, I have seen our fans refer to them as a small club.

Hope you manage to evade the fun spoilers in blue for this one.
