Alan Pardew has come out fighting and insisted Mike Ashleyisspending big to rebuild Newcastle United.

The Toon manager last night *reassured fans the £35million raised from selling Andy Carroll in Januaryisbeing used to *reinvigorate his squad – which he hopes will reach the “top 10 and challenge for the cups,” next season.

Pardew hopes to keep Joey Barton at St James’ Park rather than sell him, and he has defended the £4m sale of Kevin Nolan to West Ham, saying: “He didn’t want to stay.”

He confirmed he is ready to buy two more “offensive players”.

However, Pardew fears either Arsenal and Liverpool could swoop for left-back Jose Enrique now Manchester City have bought Gunners left-back Gael Clichy, *“complicating” Toon’s chances of the Spanish defender staying at Toon.

Pardew said of Enrique, who has only one year left on his contract: “No one is more keen for him to stay than me. His desire to play Champions League football at his age means it is difficult to keep him. We [must] keep watching and hope it falls our way.”

So far, Newcastle have landed highly-rated Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba and Sylvain Marveaux, plus young prospect Mehdi Abeid.

And Pardew said: “Mike and Derek’s backing has been excellent. I have to say that. And the noises on the last two [planned arrivals] are also positive.

“I know where that [Carroll] money goes, I assure you. It will be invested in the club. So far, the button is being pressed and I can’t ask for more than that.

"We have done more business than anyone else.

“If you add up the money and think we have not spent the £35m, you will be way off. I have to mark the cards of the fans on that.”

On Barton, who also has just one season left on his deal, Pardew said: “The important thing for him is that he sees the squad has quality.

“We can keep him where he was last year, another season. Who is to say we can’t agree a deal?

"He wants success. If we can give him that on the pitch, I think he could stay.”

that one is from the mirror

if jose if making noises about playing champions league why are liverpool being mentioned at all????? if you read that its a no brainer he's off to arse, so go now and let us get on with replacing him and not the night before the season kicks off!

reading pardews comments our expectations should be raised about what is to come, but how many times have we heard this before???? having a transfer outlay of a couple of million (cabeye - nolan fee) so far for 4 players this is just the same **** we've had from ashley for years. The carroll fee plus tv money plus season ticket money, christ how much does he want before he spends.....:emoticon-0108-speec

show some balls and have a punt on sturridge

Cabaye £4.5m, Ba free, Abeid free, Marveux free........

Now we know there are agent and transfer fees so say Ba and Marveux are a few million (seeing as they are free they stick it up you for signing on fees), Cabaye probably got another mil for him and his agent and Abeid being young and unproven wouldnt have cost more than say £500k.

So all in say 11m spent with 4m in for Nolan. Net spend around £7m.

Investment in the ground.... couple of million?

New contracts for Simpson and Tiote.... couple of million in fees (i am trying to be over the top here to prove a point).

All in £11m of the £35m spent... or thereabouts..... Keep 5m or so back to sign up Barton and Enrique, leaves alot more to splash, cant see where else Ashley has "put it all" back in the club

good points on a more realistic breakdown of what we spent so far, but still boils down to spending next to nowt with all the revenue coming in last season and this. dont get me wrong if all the signings so far have a great season and look great, all we have to look forward to is ashley flogging them for a profit

You are probably right, it would be interesting to see if when he does go if the debt of £135m or whatever it is supposed to be stays with the club? Surely that must come down if he is tipping cash back into the club that we make??? I know what the answer will be though.....

The wage reductions over the last couple seasons coupled with Nolan going (50k a week), Smith, Ameobi, Guthrie, Lovenkrands and Harper up this season means the running costs are set to significantly drop off. Again so should our debts be.

Unfortunately we are, and always have been (Gazza, Waddle, etc etc) a selling club. Get in bargains and sell for a profit. If we ever do clear the debts and the club is run as a business in its own right without needing a sugar daddy to tip up money then with the fair play financial rules coming in we could end up progressing at that point.... and hopefully have a new owner in too.....

Until then its more of the same. We dont know Ashleys intentions or what he is doing with the money, debt should be falling but time will tell.

Pardew said we are spending the money and more than fans think so far, meaning agent fees. He said that youth development players cost more than we seem to calculate for. We've probably spent around the 17m mark.

I bet the players wages that have signed over the next few years have been factored into that. For example, Cabaye £4.5m fee + 4 years at approx £45k p/w - £9,360,000 + signing on fees and agent fees - maybe another million and the total cost of his transfer is around £14,860,000. Do the same for Ba, Marveaux and the undersoil heating costs and he could argue the money has gone.

to be fair, the free signings will not have been free. there will have been a couple of million of fess with each of them. one of the projected signings is at at £7.5 million cost. we don't know about the other. i could see that it coudl be legitimately asserted that perhaps £15 million or so has either been spent or committed to the current prospects.

can't get it anywhere near £35m however

theres a few people on here saying factor in the new players fees and wages over their entire contract length and add on giving current players a better deal, there won't be much of the 35 million left.
if they turn out to be any good ashley will have sold them well before the end of their contracts!
but what about each year where you have tv money , season ticket sales , sponsorship etc.... coming in and ashley hasn,t exactly broke the bank in transfer fee's since he been here.
it's all going into that big black hole called his pocket...*** it

to again be fait, the Pardew's quote as reported in the Chronicle is not that the £35m has been spent but that the arithmatic that many fans are doing is way off. Which it may be.

The club was hemorrhaging money because of all the rediculous transfer fees and wages before and at the begining of Ashleys time in charge. The last few years have been spent making sure that there actually is a Newcastle United in 5 years time

to be fair - Ashley spent big at the managers request when he first came in: Allardyce bought a lot of players at high prices (and very high wages) and while some of them came good, most of them did not, and many of them still have wages weighing down heavily on a club that still basically loses money...

    once bitten, twice shy...

agreed, we all want there to be a club around to support, but there's a difference between pushing on and spending A BIT OF MONEY and being a tightarse.
we have been unfortunate enough to have the tightest billionaire owner of a football club ....ever -FACT

also the reason why so many fans get frustrated is that we are never told anything, i,m off to the dentist to try and calm down now :)

And what if Gameiro or Gervinho had chosen Newcastle over PSG and Arsenal? More money would have been spent, but you can't blame Pardew for those players' choices. In this age of player power, it's not all about spending money, unless you're a club spending money as Man City do...spending several hundred million pounds on transfer fees, and players know winning will come, but having 35m won't really sway an influx of players.
