Cost of being a mascot

Could be a good Xmas present for someone!

 

Not exactly, I think there's a considerable waiting list, as you would imagine.

 

The clubs that don't charge usually only select mascots from their Junior Membership schemes. Add to that the full kit that the kids need, it isn't a cheap thing to do.

£150 is not too high a price for the experience, photos etc. When my Grandson was mascot for a Portsmouth away fixture, I have to admit that it was brilliant. We were invited to meet the players before the match and we enjoyed a bit of banter with them. The next season, I arranged for my mates daughter to be mascot as he had just returned from Afghan, his whole family were treated like royalty by the club. By the way, there was no charge to us, but the Portsmouth mascots all had paid around £150.

 

What do we know of the emotional cost to the child, as Steve Jordan bears down on them with his microphone, forcing them to make predictions like some sort of footy manager poodle?

They're just children Steve.

 

Christ sake. Think of the children.

 

It should be free.

Lets say there are, maybe 4 mascots per game. That's £600 per game, or £11,400 per season. That's just over one fifth of Hatem Ben Arfa's weekly wage, and we earn that per season. Whereas a nice freebie gesture could make some less well-off kid's ****ing year.

Disgusting by the club.

 

Yes BCC mascots might be a nice earner for a Championship club but with all that TV money a PL club just looks cheap charging parents that.

 

Man United do it for free? ****ing hell by the time the kids get their go at being a mascot they must be 23.

 

My lad did it about 3 years ago - it was the same price then. As part of the package they give you a £50 voucher for the shop to make sure that they have the current kit (you don't get a reduction if you already have the kit) and 3 tickets I think (2 adults and 1 child) - again there is no reduction if you are already a season pass holder. It is a great experience and my lad loved it - but the cost would definitely put some off. He also did the away mascot last season - where it was just the cost of the tickets- also a great experience......

I was mascot a few times as a kid, they were all free, though it's fair to say at the time the club were probably begging for someone to step forward.

I only have very vague memories of sticking the ball past Alan Fettis, but they were great memories nonetheless.

 

I was a mascot in 1983. I think the only charge was to buy the kit.

 

I was a mascot in 1995. It was a present from the missus for my 40th birthday.

 

I was a mascot in the 70's think it was against Sunderland loved it and at half time you got a pie and a coke. It would be great if clubs let kids in free with an adult especially when its a cat A game £50

 

I did it 2000 early in the season against Lincoln, I'm pretty sure that it cost to do it then too, though obviously the club needed the cash more then than it does now.

 

It's disgraceful, when you take into account how little revenue it brings it only shows that some clubs are excluding poor families. It should be free. Socking.

 

You could make the same argument about doing away with ticket prices.

 

I'm sure there's a Phil Brown joke in there somewhere....
