I heard today a 1st year scholar has been sold to a Category 1 Championship side. Looks like were a selling club then!!
I think if they are Cat 1 there is nothing we can do to stop them basically taking them, subject to us getting some (not very good) Compo.
It's something that the FA need to address - of course they never will because all the power is with the rich PL clubs. What we must do is make our academy / youth system one that produces players for our first team - if youngsters (or more accurately their family) view us as a club where youngsters come through, then we will attract decent kids into our system
Cat 1 clubs can't just come in and buy players the selling club has to agree to the fee. The new EPPP rules give guidelines on player prices instead of the old tribunal system. So Bristol City would have agreed to the fee. Bristol City is currently a Cat 2 club playing academy games against Coventry, Colchester, Millwall, QPR , Etc. a Cat 1 club will play against the big prem clubs Chelsea , Arsenal, Man U , etc. and the players will have twice as much ball contact time in training so any player with ambition will want to play cat 1 footy. Bristol might feel they can not stand in the way of a players development as they cannot at this time offer that.
I swear that's not true. I'm pretty sure there is a set fee for Cat 1 teams to pay in order to get Cat 2 players. There's no negotiation as far as I'm aware.
Whatever system and rules are in place, a club with an Academy will always face the fact that some of it's members will wish to move elsewhere for a variety of reasons. That is a fact of life in any industry/commercial organisation. Thus a club like City, grade 2 Academy, will lose talent, but on the other hand City will recruit from other clubs. That scenario will never change; we win some and lose some.
There is set prices under EPPP guidlines for all categories but then there is all the add on clauses.Swansea came in for an U16 last year and rumour is that the fee with add ons was in excess of a million pound.
You're also forgetting that this player wanted to go... would have stayed if he wanted to. Joe Morrell turned liverpool down to stay, if they want to make a career with us then the best of luck. If they think they can do better elsewhere then they can jog on.
Yes Rob, I think this is the case - there is a set criteria Also, Cat 1 clubs (like Southampton) are able to come into our area, but Cat 2 clubs have a limit on how far (in miles) they can go
Just to correct us all apparently because the player is a scholar this is deemed by the FA to be a pro contract and therefore EPPP rules don't apply. It will be a 'Transfer'. That means all parties i.e. Selling Club, Buying Club and player must agree terms. Hope that clears things up. P.S I have it from a reliable source that Liverpool offered 70K for Joe Morrell that wasn't excepted, so it never got to the stage were Joe turned down the move. I think this was a bit of media play to look like BCFC had something better to offer than Liverpool!!!
