Love Barmby's David Platt style over the shoulder volley. That day made me realise this club would end up at the top.
It was a great "away day" - fantastic atmosphere, really good performance and we topped it off with some magnificent fish and chips. Smashing to see Danny Allsop's goal again as well, plenty of pace and a good finisher. I read recently (probably on here) that he has just retired and is training to be a policeman.
I also point to this match as the "wake-up".. to hammer a club like Wednesday away was unheard of.. and hadn't been considered for yonks.. was walking on air the following week..
We was stood near the wedge in the corner getting pelted with coins from their hoolies. Can't believe that was 10 years ago. Reportedly 9 thousand of us there wasn't there?
Even though I was only 9, I still remember this night so well. Still the best proper away game I've been too. I miss those days.
Hull City's coming of age night. All my Hull City supporting life, 50 years of solid support, we always got blown away in the games that mattered at places like Hillsbourgh, Bramall Lane, (cannot say Bellend Rerd because we hardly ever played them), Leicester, Birmingham, in fact most big city clubs who had a history of playing in the old first division. We murdered Wednesday that night with thousands and thousands of City fans there, probably our best ever away following for a mid week game. I've been to Wednesday in the past for a Saturday afternoon match when we had two buses there at a time when they brought thousands to Hull, and we usually lost. 10 years ago today that was all reversed and we have never looked back.
To be fair Sheffield has had some cracking away games not sure what year it was but the away game at Sheffield United we lost 3-2 in was an amazing game.
Probably the biggest buzz I've ever had at a City match. It was massive at the time Missed the first 3 goals due to traffic and Wednesday underestimating after Pearson had rang the club and told them to expect 6,000 City fans
How many fans did we take that night? I was sat in the upper tier, I remember having some sort of flu/cold but I pestered my dad to take me anyway.
Quotes at the time put it between 8-9 thousand although both tiers was full and they said they'd never seen the cheese wedge in the corner full for a long time.
Deffo one of my top City matches; Barmby was unplayable that night! Great atmosphere, great game, and great result.
As I remember, we took around 7500 fans that night. We missed the first 20 mins due to crowd congestion, Got charged at and pelted by Wednesday Hoolies after the game and took all night to get back home, But boy was it worth it. One of the best away days I have ever been to.
In my top 3 along with... this one and the win at the Emirates. People who didnt go are always amazed by the Sheff U one as we lost to a last minute winner but it was f**ing unreal. Probably the best I have ever known our fans, we literally didnt stop for 1 minute even when 2-0 down and I floated out of the stadium as if we'd smashed them 0-4. Brilliant, brilliant days. Back to Hullsborough and, like others, I was severely delayed getting in only taking my place in the seats the very second after Keane's pen went in. Barmby's 2nd goal is just amazing, there probably wasnt another player in the league who wouldve even tried that volley over the shoulder. We really did come of age that night and another terrific highlight was the win away to Bradford at the end of the same season when they gave us 2 sides of Valley Parade for a sunday noon kick-off - imagine how many wouldve gone at a later time? - and we f**ing annihilated them, Deano and all. I also remember the day after the Wednesday game and their fans on messageboards couldnt believe our support saying - and I quote (it stuck with me) - "they were louder than Man Utd and The Pigs put together". I bought the dvd from the Wednesday club shop, I might go and watch it.... That's cos legally they werent allowed to use it. At the time (is it the case now?) permanent seating had to be covered and the cheese wedge was uncovered. They only let our fans in there to stop further issues outside.
