I had the great pleasure on Tuesday night @2.30am of passing a kidney stone. I was stuck in the middle of center parcs and this procedure took approx. 4.5 hours from start to finish. I was in that much pain I was projectile vomiting whilst on the phone to 111 health people and then to the doctor. When she arrived she was great but gave a pill to me to stop me being sick...which made me sick and then stuck a needle in my arse and lied to me saying that all would be well in 30 minutes...over 3 hours I felt the pain move through my body before I pissed the ****er out. I just managed to get to sleep when 10 minutes later my 3 year old came and slapped me in the face asking to open her advent calendar for her. I have had 2 major car crashes, been stabbed, I have been in a fire and saved from drowning as a child and I would chose any of these rather than go through Tuesday night again. Kidney stones should be nominated for cotm.

You should watch us trying to play football and score goals - THEN you'd know what REAL PAIN is about!

I read where a bloke was asked what the worst pain he had endured was and he said "Well, the SECOND worst pain was when I got my balls caught in a bear trap"! To which he was asked what the WORST pain was and he replied "When I ran out of chain"!

I have heard from women who have given birth and suffered kidney stones that giving birth is much more fun. So I can kind of imagine that it wasn't at all pleasant. Apparently being male, aged 20-40, a drinker and high spinach intake, (believe it or not) are the major risk factors. I fit all those categories so it's only a matter of time.

However, 2 car crashes, a stabbing, a fire and nearly drowning?? FFS either you're a gangster or very unlucky!

Right you're in luck, I read this. I'm a kidney stone machine, that's what the doctor told me I am, I've passed loads of them, from wildly painful to the devil is inside me having a party. There's two things that get rid of them, one has a Spanish name from Cuba or other and its translated name is stone breaker, it's some sort of root, unfortunately we can't get them over here lol
However the other you can buy in telco or similar...
...lemons, that's it. If you can think back to before you had the kidney pain, you should remember your kidneys having small bouts of tightness or little twinges, this is what I get, this means I get lemons. Buy 10 or so, squeeze all the juice out into a pint glass and slowly sip it on an empty stomach over 2-4 hours, most stones are calcium based and the acid just eats away at the stone, you'll either start them moving with a bit of pain or you'll just dissolve them. This isn't a wife's tale, it works. If you can't detect them then just do the lemons bit every 6 months or so... ...no more stones/no more pain

    You can thank me later

Oh and if you get them again and the nurse try's to give you morphine say no, it just makes you feel giddy, but does nothing for the pain, I forgot what the other drug is but it's effective, a decent doctor will know

Wow. Thanks for the advice Londontiger. I'm glad I read this thread. I also have suffered from kidney stones - and my good mate over here, John Sydenham (former Southampton star), has them at the moment - and the horribleness of kidney stones is almost beyond words.
I have felt that slight tightening in the kidneys of which you speak and almost break into a cold sweat at the thought of what might be coming. I will definitely try the lemon juice!

    Bloody hell, what a thread!

I can remember many years ago being in Cambridge Military Hospital (strangely enough located in Aldershot) and a fellow patient, a gruesome Para, walking around in various stages of agony. After a very long period of obvious suffering he disappeared into the loo from where we, the ward, the hospital and, probably, the whole population of Aldershot heard the most horrific scream of abject pain imaginable; if we could of recorded it, Hammer would have paid a fortune. That scream has stuck with me, I don't want a stone.

I think the moral of this story is, never be too far from a dozen lemons!

    Excellent OP and thread!! <ok>

Been there and done that a few years ago. Your description brings back horrific memories of how it felt and the symptoms. I know what you went through and you have my sympathy. I managed to get to see the doctor at the local health centre thinking I was dying but he seemed pretty unconcerned . From dying to fit and healthy in a matter of hours !!.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that.

I had stones in January. Projectile vomiting. I was given gas and air at home that had no effect, just made me feel badly drunk.

Intravenous paracetamol in the ambulance worked a treat in the end. Cocodamol was useful over the next few weeks as the "gravel" worked its way out.

Not the best experience of my life. Female friends who have had stones have told me that it's very similar to labour.

As a non sufferer im quite surprised theres no simple solution to something that causes such prolonged pain !

Im guessing ultrasound isnt a consideration or is that for GallStones ?

    Spot on advise that.
Also if you drink strong dry cider or rich fruit juices reasonably regularly , these can help dissolve the ****ers before they grow to the point of being painful.

Stories of other peoples suffering always cheer me up. So thanks for this.

I always have a slice of lemon in my G&T, I'm just going to have to drink more

You ought to try a pilonidal abscess. One of these ****ers nearly gave me blood poisoning and septicemia. It also took 6 weeks before I was able to sit down without any discomfort.

A quick note before you start drinking a load of lemons, it'll take the enamel off your teeth <ok>(well it feels that way) so either drink it through straw or don't swill it around your gums, also after about 2-3 lemons worth it starts to taste sweet.

The name of the herb (not root) is Chanca Piedra, from the Amazon Rainforest, it would have to be wouldn't it! Why can't it be found in Cleethorpes etc...
