Alright Gents. I was listening to the post match discussion on Talksport last night where inevitably our defence came up in conversation, and one of our fans rung in and suggested the following: That the defence was not actually as bad as it is currently performing, and in fact the problem in Mignolet as they have absolutely no confidence in him: a. commanding his area b. having any ability with his feet c. any ability to deal with crosses And that puts them under additional pressure as they cannot trust him, and are in fact doing everything to keep if away from him. What do we all feel about this? Do we buy another keeper in January?
s'both......... Our defence has actually been that bad "in general" Its conceeded quite a few yes but a LO of that was set piece goals unfortunately and that's a technical deficiency a coach should put right. I don't like rodgers in that he fails to get the set up there right and if he is putting subs on they seem to come on and disrupt what set up he did have.... for instance Moreno came on v ludo, ended up at near post, did a crap job marking and let his man get vital flick on... a mourinho or pulis would never allow that... its the details. Now: what else... ah yes picking full backs who let every cross in. see leicester game late on.. free header in box... who to criticize.. defenders who have 3rd cb on and nobody knows wtf is going on or the full back who again let the ball come in in the first place. now: Is the problem all minglot? no it is now... loven lets far too many lads go get a run or makes kack decisions per that palace goal... skertl is a panicker. Is mingolet the scapegoat.... F no. You A,B,C are perfectly good points. The comparision of mingolet to a real keeper like lloris is depressing reading. I think in general it breaks into two things... utter panic at set piece and crosses as he is rooted to his line or a flapper and every opposition can see it and are actively targetting him. He's shown no improvement or willingness to destroy an opponent with a high knee cos they are in his space. however for em the biggest impact he is having is our defence sits 10 yards too deep constantly protecting him as any ball over the top is a goal cos he is the ****test sweeper upper in the prem by a mile. This deep line creates gaps all over the place. our forwards are isolated, our midfield has too much ground to cover with little legs to do it. He is just one part of the problem but lets be frank rodgers has: 1. dropped lovern for toure. result = better organisation and less mistakes 2. Brought in lucas. result = more defensive minded security and slightly more legs as well... and improving btw 3. moved henderson to right side where he played best last year.... result is an instant return on the goal sheet and slightly more active pressing. what he's not got resolved is the intensity in the play or the high press and those are down to injuries, lack of legs, bad buys and no possibility to drop mingloet and pick a real keeper who'd help both by getting that defense that big higher up.
It's partly a lack of protection from midfield and defence but he is making individual errors and making it increasingly difficult to defend him.
I think that's harsh on Migs. Fair enough with A but B is simply not true and C as only recently become a problem because he's trying a bit harder to help out / prove himself. I do agree with the sentiment of the argument though.
Defence is every player's responsibility. First ,lack of confidence for Mignolet... he almost gave a goal away from his poor kick yesterday. All players should defend as a unit. Whenever we lose the ball players in opposition's half have to track back. In that respect, Sterling is doing a good job tracking back.
If it were the back 4 then De Gea would be ****, too. No, it's just Mignolet is a flappy old lady, most useless #1 keeper we have ever had
He made eyes at Barcelona. Do you remember as many threads about Reina as Mignolet? I don't. He was a great keeper for almost all his time with us, and in his last year started to decline. For years though he was the core foundation of the team, can't say that about school boy Mignolet
Dont like saying this but he actually comes across as an idiot, bit harsh but not an intelligent footballer. He cant read the game well, afraid to come off his line and terrible distribution. The only thing he is good at is shot stopping, which is instinct not game intelligence and even that is going out of his game because his positioning is so poor initially.
B is true!!!! he can rarely find a guy with a long kick out and never releases the ball early... ever... he's poor C is also true as frankly he's a line hugger and totally uncomfortable on the ball... there is a reason why hes a target for every opposition team!
I would put it more like his FIRST six month of his last year he was poor he actually improved a lot in the second half of that season... the fact is rodgers sat down at dinner with pepe and his family and BOTH men were palying round the truth. If mingolet was bought "in case" fine but in the end pepe didn't go and lfc then decided in its infinite wisdomw to f over the guy they thought was going and shoveled him out on loan and broke the relationship permanently. It was over wages, nothing mroe, very short term thinking and its come back to bite rodgers royally.... its one of the big nails in rodgers coffin along with bad on telly.
I made a thread a couple months back how I think he is the worst number 1 we have had for a long long time. I would like to retract that comment, as I believe he is the worst keeper we have had for some time. How Jones doesn't get a game I don't know.
One of the biggest cheers on Saturday was for Ming catching a cross near the end of the game It's a shame really as he has incredible instincts but like it or not he's a massive part of the problem. His hesitation off the line is like no top level keeper I've ever seen. His distribution is appauling and slower than one of RHC's snails. He has looked like a rabbit in the headlights from day one. Made me laugh last year hearing people ranting about Pepe.... "he can **** off because he's been flirting with Barca" while saying on other threads "we must keep Suarez at all costs" Suarez did a far dirtier thing...he flirted with everyone else including the ****ing Gooners In fairness to Ming he really isn't the only problem. No keeper should have so much to deal with. We wouldn't magically improve 100% if we had a proper keeper. Even Neuer would suffer playing behind our team. He's undoubtedly part of the problem but he's not on his own in that.
Its your back 4 and Mignolet's fault, but they can be joined in the blame game by Rodgers for choosing them, and let's not forget FSG for choosing him as your manager.
