Bristol City are monitoring top League One strikers Eoin Doyle and Freddie Sears ahead of the transfer window opening in January.

On the day Robins boss Steve Cotterill was hoping to supplement his strike-force by signing Matt Smith on loan from Fulham, it emerged that he is also casting his eye over Colchester United forward Sears and Chesterfield’s Doyle, the Football League’s leading goal-scorer with 16.

Both players impressed when playing against the Robins at Ashton Gate earlier this season, Sears making a goal in a 2-1 win over Colchester and Doyle netting twice in a thrilling encounter which ended in a 3-2 triumph for City.

Cotterill is eager to boost his team’s firepower during the second half of the campaign and both Republic of Ireland born forward Doyle, 26, and ex-West Ham United starlet Sears feature on a list of targets.

City were hoping to complete a short-term deal with Fulham for Smith this afternoon, but the 6ft 6in target man is expected to be a stop-gap recruit. Cotterill has been told he has funds to invest in the transfer market in January and is likely to try and make a number of permanent signings.

    Either would be good......

We need to bolster the ranks for the second half of the season IMHO

It would make going up a must even more. In terms of likelihood and costs if we don't in losing people.

We need to make sure we aren't over ambitious like the fall post playoff final.

Wouldn't want sears out of the 2. Much rather Doyle but wouldn't surprised me if Cotts went out and got both...

To be honest I'm not sure about Sears - however, Doyle looks the real deal to me. I would be surprised if we got him (but there again I thought the same about Freeman)
