It's such a shame that we didn't manage to hold on to any of the old Humber ferries, I see the PS Tattershall Castle has just had a multi-million pound refit and is doing very well as a tourist attraction/bar/restaurant/comedy club permanently moored on the Thames... please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
Thought that there is a group trying to build a replica of the Lincoln Castle in time for the City of Culture 2017. I thought it was the same group that tried to save the old one. Good luck to them with it but would of thought cost would be a big downer to it happening.
I've had a drink and a snack on the Tattershall Castle a few times down on the Embankment. Well worth a visit, especially on a warm, sunny day when you can sit out on he deck. There is some information about the Humber ferries and the engine room has been restored and is open to view though obviously the engines themselves don't move. It's just a few yards from Charing Cross station or Embankment underground and you can walk across to the South Bank / London Eye on the new footbridge nearby.
You must be full of energy. Google Maps says the new footbridge is 1.3 miles away. In measuring the route between the Tattershall Castle and the Millenium bridge I was given the option of "avoid ferries?"
Any efforts to do something similar here were undermined by our clueless council and police putting so many restrictions on it that it wasn't viable. You had the impression that their idea of a vibrant city was one where everyone went home at 10pm.
There has been a massive failure by our civic leadership in preserving our heritage, the Lincoln Castle replica project should be fully funded and all hands should be on deck to get the Viola steam trawler back from the Grytviken whaling station in South Gorgia and fully renovated in situ for 2017.
It's not looking very likely, they raised £128k to buy it, but when their bid was unsuccessful they had to give the money back. They've got about £20k's worth of parts on display at Fort Paull, but they need £4.5m to rebuild it and I don't think it's a practical proposition, you could probably buy the PS Wingfield Castle from the Hartlepool's Maritime Experience for less.
I went on it the day before the semi final for a beer on a calm day and the boat was rocking a bit, so I wouldn't want to be on there when it's windy and rainy that's for sure!
We need a legacy and a Humber Ferry creates that. The council are indeed clueless and would rather build a Cruise Terminal and pay £20m for some hard landscaping and a shallow pond from the station to Queen Victoria Square. The paving is needed but it hardly creates a legacy. Could we not P/X the Council/NHS yacht!
From t'other bank, but.......http://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/Jazzing-ferries/story-24401222-detail/story.html
The bloke who runs the Lincoln Castle Preservation Society claims that they are going to raise the £12m required to rebuild the PS Lincoln Castle. It will be an exact replica of the original, using many of the original parts, the only differences being that it will run on diesel rather than coal and the hull will be welded rather than riveted. It will be a working ferry, that they hope to operate from a new pontoon at the Corporation Pier and it will run between Hull, Grimsby and Goole, it will also be available to hire for events, weddings, conferences etc and will have a restaurant on board. The bloke was on RH on Friday, he says investors are already lined up to fund the project and he expects it to be build next year. Ridiculously, he said his only issue now was that Hull City Council won't return his calls and he can't get past the switchboard to speak to anyone about the use of the Corporation Pier. If you're reading this HCC, ring him back you bunch of clowns.
I heard a rumour that HCC have bigger fish to fry, they are working on getting the Q E 2. It's sitting in Dubai going to waste. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...anguishes-Dubai-plan-turn-400-room-hotel.html
He might have wasted his time. You know how obstructive HCC can be to a bit of entrepreneurship, wealth and job creation. HCC should have been his first port of call, if you pardon the pun.
