I should have been clearer Plenty of great Comic Books and a fair few well written Movies too. The Avengers, Watchmen and Hellboy are good examples although there is some dross around.
I disagree. The Spidernan movies have been excellent. In fact in recent years Marvel and DC have made some of the best films ever made. Nolan's Batman trilogy being a prime example. Ironman, Spiderman, the Avengers movies and Captain America have been brilliant. X men have also had some very big highs. Sin City, 300, A scanner darkly, Watchmen, Kickass have all been great too.
There have been good examples but the latest reboot of Spider-Man does go completely against the whole premise of the original comics. How Parker comes to be Spider-Man, how that sets the tone for his character BUT above all, the fact that the cocky, confident, daring, original superhero is the alter ego of Peter Parker, the clumsy nerd unable to articulate his true feelings towards the girl he fancies. Instead they make Parker that character. The only difference between him and Spider-Man is the costume. Completely stupid. I don't see anything that sets these latest Spider-Man films apart from the cynical money-making Hollywood conveyor belt for superhero films. I do agree there are many good films, but whilst the first movie of those you've stated have been original and often groundbreaking, the sequels near enough all have been predictable dross. The only exception the Batman sequels. I don't think Darkman was originally a comic, but what Raimi did there was brilliant. Also add if it hadn't been for Tim Burton staying true (or as true as he did) to the dark original, psychologically disturbed batman of the comics, we may not have the modern era of superhero films in the way we do. I think the best superhero films like Watchmen, Nolan's Batman and even Ironman, try to do that.
The Imitation Game, the story of the Bletchley Park codebreakers and especially Alan Turing and their fight to break the Enigama code during WW2 and which the German's thought was unbreakable. A gripping film with commendable performances from all concerned especially Benedict Cumberbatch (Turing) and Keira Knightley (Joan Clarke). The only complaint I have is the use of flashbacks from the present tense to the past and back again, it throws me off the story but other films I have seen do the same thing.
Interstellar Not a usual Christopher Nolan film. It is epic, has a sharp-eyed view of the future, and characters with real human emotions. I really like this ambitious, thought-provoking, uplifting film.
Interstellar - visually stunning at times, decent enough story with plot twists. But the last 15 mins didn't live up to the rest of the film. That's the only thing that let it down for me.
Hunger Games - MockingJay Part 1 ... saw it at the weekend with the kids ... very enjoyable ... just wish they weren't stretching it out for another 12 months to see the conclusion ..
... and guilty pleasure ... on the box (now recorded!) The War Lord Charlton Heston - great soundtrack - dubious wigs (the Fresians)...
Watched: The railway man: excellent film. Made me very nearly shed a tear. Enders game: quite enjoyed the premise of the film and like d the spaceships. Ultimately a bit **** but in a good way. Robocop: watchable rubbish.
The Imitation Game Excellent. Gripping and moving throughout, with some very accomplished performances. I particularly liked Mark Strong's MI6 man's character, and Cumberbatch was predictably superb.
Speaking of Cumberbatch, why is it that he's considered a 'heartthrob'? He looks like Lord Voldemort FFS
... I suspect it is a combination of his name and the way he speaks ... something of an aristocratic Dean Gaffney
Guardians Of The Galaxy: Most entertaining film i've seen this year, cracking dialogue and fantastic action set pieces with bags of jokes. If you've not seen it then make sure you do, fantastic.
