I'm right on the border between Greenock and Gourock, very picturesque. The Old Jock Ale is 6.7%, so a strong tipple. There's some great real ales up here with lots of independant breweries, I always take a load down with me when I'm visiting the family!
Knew were in Greenock from your profile. Always did our shopping in Greenock or Port Glasgow. There are some great beers up there
Black coffee or water only. On lighter life diet, 600 calories a day and only water or black drinks allowed. Torture, made worse every time I turn on the TV to see Tom Kerridge stuffing his face or dribbly lip Jamie Oliver serving up piles of grub.
Not exactly sure - it's a very antiquated government controlled liquor distribution system we have here. Normally that beer is $3/bottle, so $2.13 on the remaining stock is good, but none left. Believe it or not, if you find a product that is not available at stores in your local area, they will actually put it on the bus from another store and deliver it to your local NBLC store at no extra cost - so I could request those 6 bottles of Affligem Blond Abbey beer in Dalhousie (4 hrs away) and have it delivered to Fredericton. A very knowledgeable nice English chap who is the Products guy at my local store takes care of business for me. He previously worked at a bar in Cambridge and met and married the daughter of the President of the NB Liquor Commission, so had an instant job when he crossed the pond with his bride (but he knows his stuff). Earlier in the year I asked him about an exotic, expensive, American Bourbon I had seen featured on an interesting TV show called "How Many People Does It Take? (in this case to produce a bottle of Makers Mark Bourbon in the deep south), so Jake pulled out a bottle from his office, popped open the bottle and poured me a glass amongst other somewhat startled shoppers - very uncharacteristic behaviour here in New Brunswick, but great marketing tool - when my Dad was over in 1990 he was having a beer for lunch at a hotel by the Petitcodiac River, when the famous "Tidal Bore" arrived (a large wave coming up river with the incoming tide from the Bay of Fundy), so we got up from our table to watch it - Dad of course, naturally, brought his beer with him and was quite bemused when the waitress came running after him saying, "Sir, sir you are not allowed to move your drink from one place to another, but I can do that for you"!
Tramore, you inspired me to buy some Port! I chose a pair of bottles - a Ruby (Dows Fine Ruby @ C$22.99) and a Tawny (KWV Paarl Special Reserve Tawny - very well priced @ C$11.99 - South African).......and I do note the mention of serving "slightly chilled". I note that some of the higher end Ports listed here run up to almost C$200, which even if I had the money, I would find a bit hard to justify. please log in to view this image please log in to view this image
Hate to say this Killy but the South African is not a Port but rather a fortified wine as only wines from Oporto in Portugal can be called Port, bit like Champagne.....I'm sure it will still be pleasant when opened. Dows on the other hand is a very old Port house from Oporto..... The only reason I mentioned serve slightly chilled is down to the definition of room temperature, at the moment room temp could be as much as 23 to 24 degrees which would make the wine somewhat cloyey, whereas if it is around 16 to 18 degrees the wine should taste fresher and be more enjoyable.... Anyway enjoy them both Killy, we've just opened a Chilean Merlot.....
Along with the Port I also picked up a few cans of Abbot Ale which was on sale @ C$2.49 for a 500ml can. please log in to view this image Those Monks knew how to prepare some nifty brews from all natural ingredients and spring water! Unfortunately no remaining bottles of this now discontinued beer Abbey Affligem Blond (6.8%), that I still have a small supply of. please log in to view this image
Kilburn, not sure if they will send internationally http://www.beermerchants.com/affligem-blond-abbey-beer-6-8-33cl-bottle.html
Thanks for the info - I imagine if they did ship overseas that the cost would be more than the beer though.
yes the Stella here is no better than Bud. I do have a few bottles of Carlsberg Elephant beer in the fridge, 7.5%
I'm another one with connections to that part of the world. My father in law lives in Dunoon. Can't think how many times I've been on the ferry from Gourock.
Bump..... Happy Friday Lads & Lasses.....will shortly be pulling the cork on a bottle of Alsace Pinot Gris, should be a rather pleasant with our Salmon and spinach custards tonight..... Whatever and wherever you are quaffing tonight, enjoy and here's hoping for a point a least tomorrow up at Toon, 3 points would be great. Cheers.
