Which game can you recall where there was multiple scorers for SAFC? I ask this as on today in 1977 Sunderland beat Bristol City 5-1 at Roker Park.. 5-0 up in 50 minutes, but with 5 different scorers. Kevin Arnott, Roy Greenwood, Mick Henderson, Shaun Elliot and Bob Lee........Gary Rowell didn't get one. Can anyone remember games like this, with lots of different scorers....4 or above?
I saw Sunderland beat Charlton Athletic 8 - 1 in August 1956. with five different scorers - Johnny Hannigan got 3, Len Shackleton 2, and one each from Ray Daniel, Stan Anderson, and Charlie Fleming. Charlton had been a good team but age was catching up with them, and a few new players just finding their feet were utterly swamped. They were relegated that season.
1956...Just seen the year before we drew 4-4 with Burnley...With 3 different scorers... But as seems normal these days, we also had another 2 different scorers..but sadly in our own goal.. In fact just a few weeks prior to that Burnley draw, SAFC was involved in another high scoring game, with Blackpool...sadly we got beat 7-3. Lots of goals around in them days, it seems.
87-88 Sherpa van trophy.. 6 Scorers v Rotherham. (7-1) Burley, Corner, Owers, Lemon, Bertschin (2) and the Sub Moore. I was one of the 6,750 brave souls that attended. 3 weeks before we beat Southend 7-0.
I was there. Home and away back then with my Mam & Dad. George Burley's was a cracker if a remember correctly. Commo - do you meant he trophy or the "sherpa van" - the trophy is the whatever it's called lower league trophy thing nowadays (3rd & 4th divisions)
It's the Football League trophy open to the 48 teams in Football league 1 and 2 now the Johnston's Paint trophy.
Got in the fulweell end for £1!!!! that night instead of the normal £2.50 so ran back to the pie shop on the corner for more sweets!!
Yes, but in the early to mid-'50s, Blackpool was one of England's glamour teams. Their goalie, George Farm was a Scottish international, centre-half Harry Johnston was England's captain ... and then THAT forward line! Stanley Matthews, the greatest player on Earth in his day and the first Balon d'Or winner, Stanley Mortensen, the only player ever to score an FA Cup Final hat-trick, Ernie Taylor, the little wizard brought in to revive Man. U. after the Munich disaster, Dave Perry, a South African international left winger with excelllent anticipation, especially when Matthews floated a cross to the back post - he scored a lot of goals. Etc. Away crowds were always big when Blackpool came to town.
Joined us in the '50s/60s in Alan Brown days to help bring on the youngsters who were emerging, he left us acrimoniously as he reckoned he only came as he was told their would be coaching job for him. Played for NUFC(51), Blackpool(53) and ManU(58) in FA cup finals.
